As the plane set off, I breathed a sigh of relief. For some people, this was the scariest part of the journey, but for me it meant I was finally free. Images swam through my head of what my new life would be like - I had used all my savings (admittedly not much) on a two-bedroom apartment just outside Sydney, so if needs be I could have a roommate. It was pet-friendly, which was perfect because I'd soon be adopting a dog to keep me company. That's my 'thing'. My 'quirk'. One of many, really, but that's beside the point.
I hate loneliness. I'm an introvert and yet I can't deal with being alone. That's why I got an apartment instead of a house, so I could be with others and feel safe. It might seem a bit stupid to move to a new country where I knew no-one, but I had the best intentions. It was my 'immersion therapy'. Face your fears, I guess.
It was about half an hour into my 19.5 hour flight when I drifted to sleep, Greenday humming through my headphones. I'd had an excruciatingly difficult day and it had certainly tired me out, so it wasn't hard for me to fall asleep with 'Good Riddance' in my ears.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sirens blared loudly all around me. They were all I could hear. I couldn't escape their noise. My head hurt - God, my head hurt like hell. Then gunshots, screams, footsteps as my head hit the floor. "Kaya!" An unfamiliar voice yelled. "Wake up!" ...what?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"Kaya! Miss Harper?" A female voice spoke, and I felt my shoulders being shaken. My eyes snapped open to see a woman looking at me worriedly. Where am I? What am I- oh. Oh no. With the sudden realisation of what must have just happened, my cheeks burned brightly. It felt like the whole plane was looking at me. They probably were.
"Oh. You-you must have had a nightmare, you were shaking - like, a lot - and sweating and at one point you screamed and started saying rando-" I cut off the shaken flight attendant.
"I'm sorry, really, I just... I don't know. I'm sorry. Wait, how do you know my name?" My brows furrowed in confusion."It's on our database. This is the seat booked by a miss Kaya Harper, and, uh, you're sat in it." She giggled lightly, forcing me to crack a smile. "Do you need anything?"
"Could I please have a coffee? And thank you so much for waking me up, oh my god." She handed me a coffee and smiled sympathetically.
"It's my job." She shrugged. Her Australian accent was comforting. "Anyway, my name's Celeste. But I already know yours."
