‘I want answers. You don’t get to walk out of my life again without enlightening me first!’ Aly forced herself to keep her gaze straight at Zac. Her heart beating so loudly in her ears, she wondered if he could hear it too. Her hands felt like ice that was piercing through her heart.
He looked drained, weary and defeated.
‘Ask anything,’ he said simply, his shoulders heaved heavily forward.
‘Let me get this right, YOU are an angel.’ She spat out the words at him.
‘Technically, in essence, I am an angel.’
‘Cut the crap, Zac. Angels don’t walk and talk and eat with humans. And they definitely don’t need to kiss us! You don’t come across like an angel.’ She hissed but her thoughts were different – he certainly does look like one – there were no flaws in his features.
‘I bent the rules, Aly.’ He started to explain with a faraway look in his eyes. ‘By a long margin – my existence before you was governed only by rules. But from the moment I saw you, I became a prisoner of my own mind.’
‘When was the first time?’ There had to be a beginning and Aly wanted to know, because even though she was a part of it, she hadn’t the slightest inkling.
‘When you were 13 and you had the saddest face I ever saw.’
Aly gasped. 13? That was 4 years ago. Holy Crap! And I thought I was the stalker!
‘You have been following me since then?’
‘No,’ he answered very softly, ‘I only saw you that one day and every year on the same day when you came to your parents’ graves. Only when you didn’t show up last year, it struck me that I had been looking forward to that particular day for many years. I felt your sadness and emptiness at the cemetery. I only wanted to comfort you.’
‘What were you doing in a cemetery? Visiting all the lost souls you couldn’t save?’ Her tongue laced with sarcasm she couldn’t quit.
His head dropped a notch and she wasn’t quite sure whether it was in agreement with her statement. Her heart sank; even as she tried to keep up her anger at him, it was a loss cause because every time she looked at him, something inside her moved.
‘Thanks for caring ... I think.’ She didn’t know what else to say.
‘Only to tell you you’ll never be alone. But even then I realized you would always feel all alone.’
He spoke the truth and she averted her eyes away from him. She was at her lowest when her parents died around here had turned gray and it seemed all her tears had been buried with her parents when the caskets were closed.
‘But when you didn’t show up last year, I wondered.... if you were okay, if you were well, your presence lingered inside of me incessantly.’
‘I forgot.’ Aly stammered.
Lies - I can’t lie to him. He’s a walking lie-detector for crying out loud!
‘No – it’s what we humans do best. We skip around the lie. I hurt and I didn’t want to remember anymore, mom, dad, my home ... It was working – till now.’ She sighed. ‘The past remains in the past. Period.’
