His voice carried conviction even though his will was shaken; the last thing he needed at this point was to be buried in guilt.
Before Zac's eyes, the angels' forms grew in size; their outlines stretching outwards and slowly blanketing the insides of the church. If memory served him right, this was a good indication as any His Brothers were livid with him. But no way was he going to back down.
He knew his next words would infuriate them all the more but he muttered under his breath, 'I want a life of my own!'
There would be no going back after that admission.
'YOU ARE NOT AN EXCEPTION - YOU ARE US!' It sounded like a thunderous earthquake was shaking the tiny island. He felt his helpless limbs vibrating with the sound waves.
Flames from the pit flew up and licked him with their tongues, entangling around his feet, tugging at his ankles, enticing him to enter their domain. Zac didn't resist; he knew this was all just a farce.
'Then release me,' Zac said.
'All you had to do was ask,' came the mocking reply and immediately Zac could move. He glanced at his upturned palm. Only a long scar was visible and his clothing was no longer smudged with his blood.
Zac floated just above the pool of fire and with a concentrated effort, turned to face the eldest.
'You know what's in my heart, you feel what I feel and you know what I will choose, as sure as the sun rises over and over. But yet you bring me here to ask me to go against my will, and as powerful and as mighty as you are, you seek the answer to one simple question - why?'
He knew he need not justify them with any more explanations. And likewise they knew they would not get Zac to alter his lovelorn quest, at least for now, they graced him with their silence. The pit of fire dimmed and closed with Zac's feet hitting the ground.
He gave one final look around his surroundings as his gaze swept past each one of the angels.
Unflinching, he traced his steps back the way he came in. But he would not go without leaving them a small token of appreciation. With each step he released an immense power of heat that burned into the walls of the church. Letters began to appear from the smouldering burns. And when the smoke dispersed, the walls were imprinted with the words -
But the greatest of these things is LOVE.
A voice behind him spoke, 'Zacharael, please --- everything ends in their world.'
A slow smile spread over his face but the smile was tinged with more than just bitterness as he answered them, 'Thanks for the reminder. I did not come to strike a deal.'
He had enough of their antics. It was time to go home.
