AT THE ROOF TOP
More determined than she had ever been in her life, she got a grip on her vexation and ran after him. She wasn't going to let him go, not without some answers. His back to her she shouted at him to stop. He kept on walking steadily.
She made it to the stairs as he started his descend, one hand reaching out to grab his shirt. As her fingers made contact with the fabric, something changed in her. Her anger ebbed replaced by shame.
He had done nothing but be nice to her. He had kept his promise on another chance.
Utter desperation filled her, knowing her next action was a toss between her ego or lose him forever. She didn't care that he brushed her off. Something inside her wanted to get out, get to him, and make him understand.
'Zac, please... don't...don't turn your back on me.' Her voice barely a whisper as she struggled to speak. Her breath laboured and her knees felt weak to the bone.
He stopped but did not turn around. She didn't dare let go of his shirt. It was all she had of him. One slip and her probability with him would forever fade away. Her mind raced frantically for the right words to say.
She struggled to say something, anything but her tongue held its ground. The wind picked up as if on cue. Déjà vu flooded her memory.
This wind.... that's how I met him. Just the very thought of it gave her goose bumps. The wind picked up and played with her hair, whipping it across her face. Instinctively she let go of his shirt to push away her hair.
And even before her fingers touched her hair, she felt his hands resting on the sides of her face. She stopped breathing. Her eyes fluttered against the wind. His eyes locked into hers'; unblinking and looked so sad as if in anguish.
A lost and haunted look covered his handsome face. The self assured boy she knew was not the same one that stood in front of her. This one looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. In that moment, all she wanted to do was pull him into her arms, hold him tight and tell him it's going to be okay. Take away whatever burden that caused his pain. But she didn't do any of those things, so afraid that if she moved, even an inch, he might disappear.
Zac sighed and in an inaudible voice said, 'I wish I could kiss you. I wish with all my heart - and soul, I am permitted one chance to kiss you.'
'Do it' Aly barely got the words out.
'You don't know what you are saying.'
'And you do.....'
His hands tightened around her head. He leaned down very slowly until their foreheads touched each other. She felt his breath on her face, and then his lips, barely touching hers'. Slowly and deliberately, she moved her fingers thru his hair. She could feel him shiver.
'If I tell you my secret,' he whispered, 'will you run away?'
'No.' She was sure, at least her voice sounded sure.
'A promise?'
'I may be a lot of things but I keep my word.'
'I wonder ...' He sounded unsure.
'You don't trust me?' She shot back at him.
'No,' he merely sighed. 'I'm afraid my secret might scare you.'
