Song: One step at a time - Jordan Sparks
"I can't wait to play soccer again," he said, as the thirteen year old boy wheeled himself into the physical training room, before he had been a strong boy, a soccer player, Mr. Popular, the moody lonely guy that every girl loved.
"Well it's gonna be a while before you can-" The doctor started to speak, but the boy was already chattering over him. He had much improved in everything since he'd been here, his attitude was making great improvement, and he never talked of what happened that day. If he kept it up he would be out of here soon. Soon enough to need to come back every day for his physical therapy, and soon enough that he would be up and walking around by the time school started, short distances. Running would be out of the question for a long time, said the therapist.
" Look!" The boy pulled his chair over to the area with two bars, wincing as he put pressure on his good leg, and stood up holding onto the railings on either side of him. At first he hadn't wanted to do anything except mope around. He'd been here almost a year, and recently he had just started to make the change to this lively energetic excited boy.
"Where did this attitude come from?" He asked the walls as the boy, Wyatt stood up leaning heavily against the rails and put one foot in front of the other, wincing with every step, and grown out of breath after about three steps. He pulled back and sat down in his chair, and sat for a second.
"That was good!" The doctor said with a smile on his face, he was honestly surprised, that the kid had been able to get that much done, before he hadn't been making any progress at all moping around, It was a surprise he had done that much in the past month the doctor hadn't been around.
"I'm gonna be able to join the team in the winter time ain't I doc?" The boy's goal was to play soccer, it was only may now, and the doctor wasn't exactly sure how far he was going to get, three steps was a baby step in the right direction, and he didn't know how to tell the kid that. "I just want to join the high school team, my freshmen year, so they know who I am ya' know?"
"Yeah... Wyatt..."
The doctor let his voice trail off. Three steps was good thing, and if the kid pushed himself he might be able to make it, well if you were optimistic.
"You remember when you didn't want to get out of bed a do this Wyatt, you'd be farther now if you had been working since then," the doctor looked down at the boy, his gleaming blue puppy dog eyes, and the long brown hair, he wore gym shorts that hid the injury that had been in a cast before.
"I can work harder now though, "
"You might have to take a year off to adjust to everything,"
"So It'll be like failing a grade right?"
"You can't just sit around a not do work for a year, for one that's illegal, and two you need to get an education., Wyatt I'm talking about online schooling, or with a tutor maybe, " the doctor shrugged but continued. "I think it would be best that you don't play anything this year, one it's a long time off, and I could be completely shooting in the dark here, but it seems like you still have some other things to deal with as well, although your leg is definitely high priority, you can't just get right back up, as you've seen, it's a lot of work,"
"I can do it though," he pleaded with the doctor.
"You almost lost your leg, don't rush it, You have to take this whole recovery thing one step at a time,"
"I didn't though,"
"You need to be careful of that leg, things like this they take a long time and you're going to hurt yourself, if you push it,"
