Emily's POV

Max: are you going tonight

Emily: I don't think so

Max: I want you to go

Emily: I want to but Eddie's gonna be there

Max: so you should show up and show him what he fucked up

Emily: that sounds like a terrible idea

Emily: I love it

Max: I knew you would lol

Emily: you should come over we can get ready

Max: ok

Max convinced me to go tonight. It's been a week since Eddie said we should just be friends. It's all I've thought about since, haven't left my house since. Just sat up in my room sulking. Mom said I need to get out of the house and do something to distract myself.

This counts as getting out of the house, I guess.

Will I be in at a party where Eddie might be? Yes.

Is this a terrible idea? Also yes.

-

"What're you going to wear?" Max asks.

"I don't know." She shuffles through my closet.

"You should wear this," Max pulls out a black skirt and then a black cropped cami.

"Okay." I agree.

"And these." She grabs a pair of black tights, handing it all to me.

I quickly change and look at myself in the mirror. I don't like the way I look.

"Yes that's perfect. Put these on." Max hands me a few accessories, I listen and put them on. A couple necklaces and a ring.

"Now just wear your combat boots and he'll regret ever crossing you." She smiles.

"Okay."

"I don't know how to do makeup so you're on your own with that." She smiles and I laugh.

Max watches as I do my makeup, ending with eyeliner and a little lip gloss.

"You look so hot." She grins.

"Thank you. The only problem is my mom would never let me wear this out." I say.

"Cover up with a flannel or something."

"That might actually not look bad." I say, looking in my closet for the oversized flannel I purchased. Once I find it I put it on, temporarily buttoning it until we get to the party.

"Perfect." Max smiles, "Can you do mine?"

"Yes," I say excitedly. I've never done anything like this, it's so fun having a girl friend.

By the time we finish getting ready the party already started.

"We're late."

"Who cares." Max says. Lucas is going to pick us up.

-

When we arrive Mike answers the door and let's us in. We follow him down stairs into his basement. I scan the room seeing a couple dozen people down here, my eyes stop when they're met with Eddie's, he smiles. I only look at him for a few moments before I look away. Max walks past him so I follow avoiding eye contact.

We sit on a couch across the room from where Eddie is standing.

"He was totally staring at you." Max laughs.

"I know." I laugh back. When I look over back to Eddie his approaching us but Steve beats him. Steve sits down next to me.

"Hey Emily." Steve smiles.

"Hi," I awkwardly smile.

"Look I don't want things to be awkward between us." Steve says.

"Why would it be awkward?" I play dumb.

Steve laughs, "Uh remember when I tried kissing you when we were in middle school?"

"Yes." I laugh remembering that embarrassing moment. I never thought how that must of been humiliating for him too. I was only 11 and he must of been 13, probably traumatized him just as badly.

"Part of me, was hoping you wouldn't remember that." He uncomfortably rubs the back of his neck.

"How could I forgert my first kiss?" I say.

"I wish you would have."

"It wasn't so bad." I smile.

"Really?" Steve looks at me surprised.

"Just caught me off guard." I admit.

"Good to know." He smiles, staring at me. Now I'm uncomfortable.

I awkwardly smile and look around, realizing Max left us alone. Steve goes to touch my hand trying to regain my attention, I flinch.

"Sorry I didn't," I'm interrupted when we both realize someone's hovering over us, it's Eddie. He's stood there not saying a single word looking between Steve and I.

"What?" Is all I can manage to blurt out.

"Can I talk to you?" Eddie asks. I look over to Steve, he looks annoyed. I'd hate to admit it but I'm thankful Eddie interrupted whatever this was between, Steve and I.

I give Steve an apologetic look and mouth sorry before standing up. "Let's get this over with." I mutter leading Eddie to door that leads outside, away from every one.

Once outside there's stairs leading up into Mike's backyard. I sit on the middle step and Eddie stands on the lower steps, I look up and he's just staring off into the sky like he's trying to figure out exactly what he wants to say.

"What do you want?" I say snapping his attention back to this moment.

He takes a seat next to me, "I just wanted to clear things up and talk to you."

I just nod letting him speak, not interrupting him.

"Max told me why you stopped responding to me. She said you saw me and a girl going into my trailer." Eddie sighs.

"Doesn't matter, we're just friends." I snap.

"That was Chrissy Cunningham. I sell weed occasionally to make extra cash, I was selling to her."

"Weed?"

"Yes, that's all it was. As soon as I sold to her I gave her a ride home and haven't heard from her since."

"Why didn't you tell me this from the get go?" I ask, confused.

"I don't know I didn't think it mattered." Eddie admits.

"We'll that doesn't change the fact that we're still just friends." I say harshly, referencing his last text he sent me.

"I only said that because the night you were ignoring me I went to your house to talk to you. I heard the terrible things your mom said about me and you agreeing with her." I finally find the courage to look over at Eddie, he looks upset. Before I can even respond, "It really hurt me hearing you agree with her. I thought you were one of the few people who didn't see me as a low life freak."

"I was emotional and exhausted. I was just agreeing to agree, to get her off my back. After everything I've said to you, you really thought I could think that?" I ask.

"Yes."
