11:00 a.m Friday.
Adjacent to a smoking stove on a dingy balcony of their apart, Kaya snored. She was hungry, her black school uniform shiny with the coal that had stained her small hands too.
It had been two hours since she had hustled to get the coal burning and so dangerously, she had dozed off when it was most crucial - when there was no enough air.
The agent of slumber had hung in the air, but not for long.
The dangerous fumes of carbon monoxide from the stove were released in the enclosed space and for once her enemy turned to her saviour. The gas reacted with the carbon monoxide neutralizing it and fuelling the fire. The compounds of the gas were then broken down and the air cleared up and twenty minutes later, the girl opened her eyes.
Confused, as usual whenever she awoke, she slowly and weakly sat up on the dirty floor. Kaya looked around, slowly making sense of her surroundings and she had a feeling it was not the first time her thoughts were jumbled up.

Kaya figured that she had put the stove on for an important reason. Was it to cook food ?
It would make sense. Kaya was famished.
She stared at the stove and worriedly noted the coal was quickly burning out. She stared at the remaining coal in the sack.
Would it be enough ?
What was the fire for in the first place ? Food ?
Where was she ? Was she home ?
Why was she in school uniform?
What had happened to her memory ?
Kaya struggled. She was scared.
She simply rose and added more coals in the stove then wandered into the apartment maybe to find some answers and food.
Whatever had robbed her of her memory must have done it while she was asleep.
Robbed !
The word echoed in her head.
Was that it ?
Had they been robbed ?
Did the robbers hit her head ?
She wondered.
Kaya stood aimlessly at the den, staring at the family photos on the cream walls.
The lady who bore resemblance to her, caught her attention and fragments of her repetitive dream resurfaced . She saw the woman, though a little older than her. Kaya remembered it.
Umama !
Kaya grabbed her phone from the coffee table in a jiffy.
