Thud !

Kaya groaned as she startled awake, slowly blinking her eyes allowing them to focus while she registered that she was on the cold while tiled kitchen floor and not at the kitchen counter where she fell asleep. She groggily looked at the clock on the wall, ignoring her already grumbling stomach and angry emotions bubbling within for the fact no one cared to wake her. Frowning at the clock then cursing immediately as she sprang on her unsteady feet, Kaya felt panic overwhelming her. She was late for school!

She ran to her tiny room, hastily freshening and dressing up. With a final tug at her skirt and a heavy black scarf around her neck, Kaya sped from the tiny apartment not checking whether her mother or her little brother were around. Swearing under her breath as she calculated the kind of punishment she would receive that day bearing in mind that it was still Mr. Lethabo on duty, Kaya jumped down the stairs not paying any mind the two snoring bodies on the way but eventually stopped cold when she rushed from the tall building and saw the disturbing scene on the streets.

The morning traffic was unusually heavy but what piqued her interest were the many bodies on the streets, dreadfully she crept slowly to a middle man curled like a ball a few yards from her on the street. His right arm was tucked under his head and his mouth released a soft snore, he seemed peaceful and it would have been okay if the situation was not as odd as it was.

“What in the world?” Kaya muttered the question and bent too shake the man awake.

No response.

She vigorously shook him, tampering with his sleeping position only for him to hiss then continue snoring louder.

“Whats going on? ” Kaya whispered to herself.

She turned back and ran to a pulled over cab on the side of the road. She began loudly tapping on the window at the drivers side.

“HEY! HEY!”  Kaya loudly exclaimed, her small hands loud against the window that her knuckles started to ache. She desperately tried to attract the drivers attention who had leaned over the steering wheel, his cap over his bowed head and his eyes hopelessly shut.

The man did not budge.

Suddenly, she was seized by a fit of cough and she looked around realizing it was growing foggy. Kaya frantically begun running back to her apartment sensing whatever strange thing had happened to the people around her had to do with the grey fog growing dense around her. She could feel her eyes getting heavy and she tightly placed the heavy scarf over nose willing herself not to breathe until she made it back.

With a gasp, she pulled the door to her tiny apartment open and rushed in, frantically shutting the windows while dreadfully realizing her brother and mother were not in.

Oh no! She fearfully whispered, her right small hand tightly holding the scarf over her nose while tears prickled her heavy eyes.
