1. Cursed

As the thud becomes louder he looked back into his lover’s eyes .. he smiled.

“Jeon fucking Jungkook!! WHAT THE HELL YOU TOOK SO LONG FOR?”.

A sudden punch lands on the boy’s face.

“The stores were opened late dad”, he stutters out as he notices the blood on the floor. The man has broken his nose.

“HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO TELL YOU I AM NOT YOUR DAD?”, The man blasts, “NOW GIVE ME THE BEERS AND MAKE THE DINNER YOU PUNK”.

Jake, Jungkook’s step-father has been living with them for a few years now. He was good to Jungkook at first when he started dating his mother. They soon got married too. Jungkook was happy to finally have a father figure in life, the one desire he always had. But soon Jake had an accident on the construction side he was working when the crane got out of control, causing the building to collapse with all the workers in it. Jake lost many friends that day, including his legs. And to Jungkook’s misery he blames it on the boy.

“They warned me that the boy is unlucky. That it was his birth that caused his biological father to disappear and when his mother married again the new husband too died off car crash while taking the kid out for ice-cream. He is a curse they said and I didn’t listen. And LOOK AT ME NOW. I should’ve never taken the kid to show how buildings are constructed. He can only bring bad luck”, Jungkook heard Jake crying to his sister.

Yes, he was there when the tragedy happened, as he was there alone with his father before he left and as he was there happily licking the ice-cream just before the truck came.. splashing blood everywhere.

“I am home”, Lena’s tired voice is heard in the drawing room.

Lena, Jungkook’s mother had a rough life of course. It’s not easy living when people around gossip about your child being a curse. She was devastated when her husband left.. suddenly walked away just after seeing their new-born son as the nurse had informed. But she pulled it together for Jungkook. ‘He was a coward’, she told to herself and move on with her live, making it beautiful and worth living with Jungkook, her golden son.

Gold. Yes. She can still remember the vision of a prince walking towards her as everything around him turns gold with each steps. The doctor said she has hallucinated in the birth pain. But she knows.. it must be the incarnation of JK.. the greatest hero of all who saved the planet many years ago. Which is the sole reason she named her son ‘Jungkook’, historically the real name of the great JK.

She looks outside the window, towards the mighty statue, ‘help my son JK, guide him’, she prayed silently.

She had never told Jungkook his father’s name. ‘Jeon’ was not even the man’s surname. She simply went back to her maiden name, believing herself to be enough for her child. She took a job in the nearby grocery store. And if she could just ignore the public talk, life was good for them. She soon fell in love with her co-worker, Sam and got married. Sam really was a good man and liked Jungkook a lot. “Don’t you think ‘Jungkook’ is an old fashioned name for modern day society? You should change it to ‘Jordon’ or ‘Jack’ or something. Or else the kid might get bullied later and might not feel belonged”, Sam used to concern. But somehow Lena always feels the name right for his son, as if the name belongs to him. She used to recall her vision and said, “Bullying will only make him stronger”. Only if she knew back then.

After Sam’s death, the rumours of her son spread like a fire. Everyone said he was a disgrace to the great hero’s name. Life in school became a nightmare for the 8 year-old kid. Men started to keep distance from Lena, not that she was bothered much about that, but what she was bothered was her neighbours closing their doors on her and her relatives…

“LENA BRING ME SOME WATER”, Jake’s shout brings Lena back from her thoughts. After his accident, Jake has become rude and demanding. She went to kitchen to fetch some water only to find son cooking with a wipe holding on his nose.. oozing red.
