Ms. Ames took me to her house after school. The ride there was silent. After being in the nurse, everyone had made fun of me. No one could give me a break. Kyle had tried to speak to me, but I couldn't. I couldn't handle it. Kyle was my friend. And I couldn't mess that up. Cayla messaged me, saying her and Vince were together. Like, together, together.

"Welcome to my humble abode," Ms. Ames laughed as she pulled up to her house.

I got out her car and put my bag on my shoulder. We walked in and she told me to sit. I sat on the couch and looked at the floor.

"Want anything to eat or drink?" She asked me.

"No, thanks," I said.

She sat next to me and hugged me. She petted my hair and I breathed. "Why have you been so nice to me?"

"Because, Abigail, you're a kind person. You have something special to offer the world. You may not see it, but I do," she said, not letting go.

"What do I have to offer?" I chuckled.

"You listen to others. You try to reason. You care, even if you don't realize it," she said.

Her chin was on my head. I tried not to cry. I wiped my eyes with my hands and Ms. Ames smiled at me.

"I don't know what it's like to grow up without a mother. But I can't imagine life without her. And you've had to have life without her. And if I could bring her back for you, I would," she said.

"Thanks," I whispered.

"Rest up," she patted my head. "You've had a long day."

I laid on the couch, closed my eyes, and felt a thick blanket drape over me as I fell asleep.
