Two weeks later, I was at the skatepark, riding. Things had gotten a bit better. I stayed with Ms. Ames and was able to sleep through the night. Kyle and I hadn't really spoken too much, but that was a good thing. If he liked me, our friendship would be ruined and I couldn't risk it.
As I skated, I thought about my parents. I really missed my mom. I missed my dad too, but he was hard to miss when all he did was put me down. My mom never had a mean word about anyone. She always saw the good in people and that was what got her killed. That was why I didn't trust others.
"Hey, Abs!" Danny hugged me.
"Gah!" I gasped as he hugged me while I was still riding. "I almost fell!"
"But you didn't," he laughed. "How are you doing lately?"
"Better. What about you?" I asked him.
"I'm good," he said.
"And Cayla and the guys?" I asked.
He nodded. "All well."
"I'm so sorry I haven't been the best friend lately," I said.
"Abigail, we get it. We know you love us and we love you," he said.
I nodded.
"Come on," he said and I followed him.
We rode to my house and everyone was there. There were flowers, everyone looked nice, and smiles were everywhere.
"What's all this? My birthday was two weeks ago," I said awkwardly.
Cayla just giggled and held Vince's hand and I looked at Luke and Kyle and Danny went to go stand by them.
"Can someone please explain what's happening?" I asked.
"I want you to be my girlfriend, Abigail."
