He Don't Care

Makoto found herself sitting in her room. She didn't remember entering the station, taking the train, entering the building. She had no idea how she got to her room. Her clothes and hair were still wet from the rain.

Her mind was a chaos of memories and accusations, of sorrow and rage. If anyone had come up to her and told her that Akira was cheating on her, She wouldn't have believed it. Having seen his interaction with the unfamiliar girl by herself, She still had a hard time accepting it. Her brain frantically looked for clues, for reasons, for excuses, anything to convince herself that she was wrong. When she found that she couldn't find any, she started crying again.

It was much later, Makoto didn't really know how much, that she calmed down. With a sigh, She changed out of her wet clothes and thought about what to do next.

He's going to try to apologize. He's going to find me tomorrow and talk to me. God, how do I avoid him tomorrow? And the next day? And the next day after that? How do I let him know that I know everything and that I don't want to see him anymore?

As she was pacing in her room, she saw her desk. How many times had she sat there and wrote foolish words with a foolish smile? Then it hit her.

A letter.

She'd write him a letter saying goodbye. If he had any decency at all he would leave her alone. She sat down and started writing. Makoto forced her to relive what she had just seen, step by step, so she could properly let Akira know that he couldn't lie to her, that there was no explanation for what she witnessed. Tears fell down on the paper as she did, leaving blotches of ink under the lines. When she finally finished, she collapsed on her bed.

Makoto arrived in Shujin even earlier than usual. She had tried to rest, but the rain had progressed into a storm and every time she fell asleep she'd wake up a few minutes later, having had some kind of nightmare she couldn't remember. When it dawned, she decided to get ready for school.

As she was walking towards the Student Council Room, she saw Haru alone in their classroom, seemingly doing something to her desk.

"Okumura-san? What are you doing?" Asked Makoto.

Haru jumped. "Er.... Oh, you got me! And I was so proud of keeping it a secret this long!"

Makoto noticed the girl had an envelope in her hand.

So that's how you were sneaking the letters in here. Clever, very clever.

"Well, no use hiding it now. Here you go Mako-chan, special delivery!"

Haru extended the envelope towards her. Makoto opened her bag, but instead of putting Akira's letter away, she took out her own letter.

"Thank you Okumura-san, but that won't be necessary. Can you please take this letter to him instead?"

"Oh... Ok. Do you want me to tell him something?"

"Everything I have to say to him is in that letter." Said Makoto, barely containing her emotions.

"Mako-chan... did something happen? I know we're not that close, but if there's anything I can do-"

"I-I'm fine!" Interrupted Makoto. "No one needs to worry about me, I'm always fine. "

Haru looked at her worried. Makoto just wanted to escape, to be left alone. Without a word, she left the classroom and headed for the stairs.

As Akira was getting ready for class, Haru appeared at the door. There was a worried look on her face. Akira walked up to her.

"Hey Haru. Is something wrong?"
