As she desperately ran through the dark woods, Maddy felt tears rushing down her cheeks. She never thought the villagers would be cruel enough to make hounds hunt her. They though she was a demon or monster for being able to see spirits.
Since Maddy was a small child, parents of other children were afraid of letting their kids play with her. The only friends she had were the spirits. No one ever believed such things could exist, Maddy was the only one who could interact with them. Her father had told her that it was a special gift. How could it be a gift? Much less a special one!
She heard a howl in the distance and ran as fast as she could. Her favorite spirit,
Quiver, ran alongside of her. Quiver was the spirit of a silver fox. Maddy knew her since she was four and they had always been great friends. Being a talking spirit, Quiver was always able to easily communicate with Maddy.
"Maddy, what are you going to do?" Asked Quiver, as they ran away from the hounds.
"I don't know! I don't even know where we are!" Maddy was terrified.
It was winter and snow covered the ground. She was only wearing a dress, boots, a scarf and a wool sweater. It was freezing and her legs felt numb, still she wouldn't stop running until the sound of the hounds was faint.
As they reached a frozen lake, Maddy saw something glowing in the other side. The light was light blue, and she suddenly felt a weird sensation. As the light got nearer she saw the shape of a deer. Quiver growled as the animal stopped at five meters from them. It wasn't an ordinary deer, it had something that made it unique.
