Three deep breaths. The last one she unwittingly held until she choked up and gasped for air. Then she drew another, exhaled through her mouth and drew another. Then another. And another.
All the while, her ears rang with a steady noise making it hard to hear anything else. So she clutched her chest to feel her heartbeats that once again went haywire for no apparent reason. She just had to make sure that it was her heart making that noise.
Then the floodgates opened and the sobs broke out. She couldn't stop them. She always knew she couldn't stop them —no, never at will. So she yielded to the obscure grief and wept until she was all cried out.
When her tears had subsided, she slowly became acquainted with her surroundings as her damp eyes adjusted to the light. She found herself staring at a familiar object sitting on the table to her left as it refracted the sunbeams from the window. Only then did she hear a female voice calling her name repeatedly.
"Youngie, can you hear me?" Do Hyun asked as she sat on the bedside, holding Youngie on both shoulders. "Youngie? Please answer me."
So with a yet still disoriented gaze, Youngie looked up and answered with a feeble voice.
"Ne."
"Oh, thank God," Do Hyun broke down in tears as she wrapped her arms around Youngie. She then carefully pulled away, her hands not leaving Youngie's shoulders. "Gwenchana?"
"Ne."
"Do you know where we are?"
Youngie then glanced around the room taking note of its blinding brightness, then fixed her gaze back on Do Hyun and nodded.
"Namwon."
With a sigh of relief, Do Hyun silently thanked the heavens that her forgetful best friend recognized the place.
"Do you remember why we're here?"
"Screening."
"Good. What's the last thing you remember doing yesterday?"
"Omo.. Did you get the job?"
"Answer my question first."
Youngie then sat up right up, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Do Hyun quickly helped her by putting a pillow behind her back.
"Why are you asking me those things like it's the first time I woke up disoriented?" Youngie asked, quite perplexed by Do Hyun's line of questioning. "You know I don't usually keep track of the things I can recall from the previous day, right?"
"Just this once," Do Hyun insisted. "Tell me the last thing you remember doing yesterday."
So Youngie took a deep breath and tried to recall the things she did from the day before that made it to her present memory..
