As November came to an end the fifth years were all occupied under the burden of O.W.Ls, their professors were giving them more and more assignments, tough assignments. Many students were constantly having breakdowns and were found in the Hospital wing asking her for potions to calm their nerves and for stress.
The marauders were also having tough times and were not able to find time for pulling off pranks.
James particularly was having the hardest time among the four, as he has to practice quidditch every day, their first match was close and Frank Longbottom their captain was forcing them to practice every day.
As a result one evening very tired-looking James came to the common room after 4 hours of practice, which he enjoyed but nevertheless was exhausted and wanted to go straight to bed after dinner but couldn't as he had still to complete his divination homework about dreams and their meanings and then he has to complete his astronomy chart.
Sirius and Pete were in detention with Sprout for blowing up everyone's pots which resulted that the students having to repot the Stinging Nettle (used for boil cure ). And Remus who has already completed his assignments was on prefect patrol.
Groaning, James took out his astronomy chart and sat down by the table in a corner to avoid disturbance. He then remembered about something his uncle Ben has given him and ran upstairs to grab it, it was a walkman with some of the best songs which James loved (especially THE BEATLES was his favorite band ).
He started listening to songs and feeling happy he began to complete his astronomy chart ( he has always found listening to music while studying very helpful ). He was so lost in his work and the song 'Blackbird by the Beatles' that he did not notice that the common room has become emptied and only he was sitting there, he also did not notice Sirius and Pete going up to the dorm and not when the portrait opened and two tired looking people made their way into the common room.
" Have you completed your assignments Lily ? " asked Remus
"No, still have to do divination .. ugh I hate it, have you done it?" said Lily sadly.
" I don't take divination, I have Ancient Ruins, and have completed it in the evening," replied Remus with a huge yawn, he bid good night to Lily and went up to the boy's dorm.
Lily then noticed a black-messy-haired boy sitting in a corner doing work and humming .. wait 'HEY JUDE' her favorite song (she loved the Beatles. especially John Lennon).
She walked up to the boy and saw over his shoulder that he was finishing his astronomy chart and was humming and moving his body in the rhythm of the song.
Lily tapped on his shoulder and he was startled, then looked around to meet her green eyes, he has dark circles below his eyes but he was enjoying himself, he took off the walkman from his ears.
"Merlin! Evans, you gave me a shock " but was grinning.
"Were you listening to ' Hey Jude' ?'
"Yes."
"But muggle devices don't work in Hogwarts," she said confusedly.
"I know, actually this walkman is a magical one, a magical music player, so it works here, .....and I have checked the rule, it's legal to use, ..... I think ... in case you thinking of turning me in ," he said scratching his head and hoping Lily, a prefect doesn't confiscate his walkman.
"I was not going to turn you in and will not if you will do me a favor ."
Lily Evans asking for a favor and that too to James, it was surely odd but nevertheless, James said with a grin " Anything for you Evans "
" Ok .. so you have to share the walkman with me too ............... please," Lily said.
James was kind of taken aback but said " So you like The Beatles huh ?"
" Are you kidding? I love them, I used to listen to them all summer back at home."
" Ok, .. you can absolutely use it ...... but don't tell Sirius that it's a music player, he thinks it is a medication device to help my eyesight."
"Ok .......... so have you done your divination homework about dream interpretation ? " asked Lily.
James shrugged " No, I am going to do it next "
" I haven't done it myself with all the other work plus prefect duties " sighed Lily.
" Same Quidditch practices for me .............. Hey come sit we can do it together ....... we can um listen to the songs while doing it " said James hesitantly, thinking that Lily might turn down the offer, but to his relief, she smiled and sat next to him.
" Sounds good to me, and as I hate divination some music can surely help," said Lily taking out her divination work.
"How you got this walkman and how do you know the Beatles, very less witches, and wizards know about them ?"
"My Uncle Ben, he is very fond of the muggle world and he introduced me to the Beatles, eagles, and others. He gave me this walkman during summer and he also brought some movies. "
" He sounds cool "
" Oh yes, he is. He is just LEGENDARY "

Listening to the songs both of them completed their dream interpretation homework with help of a dream oracle book.
By the time they were making their way to the stairs, both of them were feeling happy. They bid goodnight and on James' request, she agreed to do their homework now together, as it has become easier to do homework with his time-to-time funny comments and jokes.
Lily laying on her bed realized that James Potter can be a good company to have when he is not surrounded by other people, he made her laugh with his funny jokes and has helped her in her work, being a genius himself and she had enjoyed cursing old Professor Videntis Predittore ( their divination teacher who was in her 90s or 100s and always seemed to be lost in her own world .)
James just like Lily has enjoyed working together and was sad when their dream interpretation work ( which he loathed ) was completed.
Feeling happy he slowly fell asleep and got lost in his dreams of green eyes.
Although Lily continued to do homework with James, she each time turned down his offer to go on a date with him when he used to ask her in front of everybody but he hadn't asked her out even a single time during their homework sessions, much to her relief.
Lily just hoped that James would behave the same way all day in the way he used to behave when they used to do their homework, but her hope seemed to be crushed each day.
It seemed as though there were two James, one who annoys and irritates her all day and the other James who helped her, made her laugh, and act maturely when they were alone doing their homework, many times Remus, Pete, Mary and Marlene used to join them and sometimes they were joined by Sirius who preferred mostly to annoy others. Peter usually used to bring food from the kitchen for all (mostly for his own hunger) to eat while studying.
Thus slowly they all began to become close friends and the table beside the fireplace become their common spot.
James hoped that things remain the way they were now and only improve.
