TOMMY'S POV
I got my few school supplies together and got on the yellow bus to hell. I've always hated school. Everyone acted like I didn't exist unless I was being made fun of. I was very smart and could easily make A's but I didn't want to be recognized for awards and everything so I maintained a C average.
I chose a seat in the back of the bus, put in my headphones, and rode to school without saying a word to anyone.
I made it through my first few periods of school okay. The teachers didn't make me introduce myself or any dumb shit like that. Lunch, however, didn't go as well.
I got the crap the school calls lunch and sat at a table by myself. Some preppy jocks came over to me and pushed my tray off into the floor.
"What's the big deal?" I asked.
"This is where we sit," was the reply from the biggest jock.
"You need serious help. It would be so much easier had you told me instead of starting this whole ordeal."
"That's it, asshole," the big jock said. He pushed me off the chair into the floor where he and his minions kicked me repeatedly. I felt so helpless. Finally, one of the teachers came and broke it up.
"Are you okay, young man?" he inquired. I ignored him and ran into the hallway as quickly as I could. I could feel tears welling in my eyes. I didn't pay attention to where I was going so I ran into this one kid by accident.
"Would you watch where you're-" his words broke off as he looked up to see my face. "I'm sorry. It's fine. What's wrong?"
"Please leave me alone," I pleaded.
"You look like you need a friend and, to be honest, so do I," he told me. "I'm Adam."
"Tommy." I held out my hand to help him up.
"Why are you crying?" he asked me.
"Jerks being aggressive," I replied. He saw the cut I sustained under my eye.
"Come to the bathroom with me and let me clean that," he insisted.
"You'll miss your lunch," I warned.
"You're worth it," he told me kindly.
