Suddenly through the air came the bang-bang-bang sound of a door being slapped. At least, the sound resembled a door being slapped. But at the same time it wasn't m. It was forceful and panicked, without a moment of pause. It's also sounded dull, like it was separated from their ears by a layer of something.
All three froze.
It was as off all the dead Chang Clan members were banging on their coffin lids. Yet, at the same time Lan Tian felt a indescribable pull towards the source.
The group noiselessly slunk closer. Once behind a pulled at the centre of the cemetery, amount the tombstones, there appeared to be a hole. It was very deep, and next to it were mounds of dirt that appeared to have been recently dug. A soft sound came from within.
Someone was digging graves. They watched intently waiting for the culprit to arise. Two figures kept lightly from the open grave. They were firmly attached to each other, one carrying the other on its back, and dressed entirely in black.
The one on the back appeared to be a corpse. Suddenly the gravedigger whipped their head around to look at the group. A black haze surrounded the figures head. Lan Tian and Lan Wangji already had their swords out and swept to cross swords with the person.
Their opponent's sword was also surrounded in a black haze, meaning it would be easily recognizable otherwise. The swords clashed a few times before returning to their owners.
Lan Tian sat the next part out knowing when their Dad gets this serious there's no point helping.
The figure pulled a travel talisman from their waist. Lan Tian watched in awe as Wei Wuxian struck out twice with his palm then bent one knee smashing a fist into the ground. It created a wave that pierced through the ground and thick coffin lids. Hand emerged from the ground trapping the gravedigger. Wei Wuxian pulled out his flute and a sharp melody broke through the falling night. Two skulls, with bodies following, emerged like snakes, mouths open to bite the gravedigger.
Lan Tian quickly memorized the melody before changing attention back to the matter at hand.
Spiritual power coursed through the gravedigger's body, and a shock was was sent across the ground. This sent the corpse on their back flying. Wei Wuxian laughed and Lan Tian caught the corpse.
The gravedigger whipped the transportation talisman onto the ground and blue flames rolled to the sky as the person vanished.
Wei Wuxian walked towards Lan Wangji, "Lets see who they dug out."
The two turned to Lan Tian and were taken aback. The head of the corpse was already bludgeoned. But the gaping wound showed no blood or brains but rather cotton.
Wei Wuxian ripped the head off, "What the heck is this? There a fake corpse made of cotton and rags buried in the Chang family cemetery?"
Lan Tian weighed the body examining it fully. "It's not all fake." He knocked lightly on the body of the corpse. It was the only real part, so the other fake parts must have been to try and trick the body.
Wei Wuxian rose to his feet. "It seems the corpse-hider had already taken notice of our investigation into this case. They were afraid we'd dig up the torso, so they came to get it. We arrived just in time hahaha... but" His time completely changed m, "why was that smoke-mask so familiar with your clans sword technique?"
The three pondered for a moment before Lan Tian pointed out, "Since he did all that they must be a high level cultivator, but we also have no clues to who they are."
Lan Wangji put the torso in a sealing pouch and they walked back to the tavern district.
Before they walked in Lan Tian grabbed his Dad's arm, "Can we talk for a second." He nodded and Wei Wuxian went into the tavern alone. "It's him isn't it."
Lan Wangji nodded slowly, Lan Tian questioned, "Why didn't you tell me after I asked you so many times? I could have handled it."
"Lan Tian, you're just a kids I couldn't let you carry this burden." Lan Wangji placed his hand on Lan Tian's shoulder.
"I'm not a kid anymore." Lan Tian shook off Lan Wangji and went to join Wei Wuxian in the tavern.
Lan Wangji closed his eyes slowly before following his child into the tavern.
Lan Tian just listened to the rendition of their recent adventure as it was explained to a man in the bar.
When the two elders started to get enveloped in the work Lan Tian took their leave and went to a near by forest. He stood staring into its blank darkness for a moment before sitting down and pulling our their flute. He copied Wei Wuxian's melody exactly but nothing happened. They stayed there for a few moments before giving up and getting up to leave. However, as he stood tens of undead bodies emerged from the ground and stood facing Lan Tian.
He stood there staring at them before they collapsed when they lost focus due to the sound of another flute. He quietly ran towards the source to see what was going on.
Soon Wen Ning emerged from the darkness. He was dressed in all black emphasizing his oddly white eyes.
Wei Wuxian circled the man and demanded, "Stand properly." Then, "Hand."
Lan Tian watched as Wei Wuxian examined the chains of Wen Nings wrists. They watched in confusion as Wei Wuxian fished around in the ghost general's hair and pulled out a long black nail.
Wen Nings face trembled and colour returned to his eyes. Lan Tian watched as those eyes shifted towards his direction and quickly hid behind a tree.
"Hello? Who's out there?"
