"Watcha reading Ki?" Her father peeked into her room, seeing Kiana reading a weird-looking book. She was about to finish her page so she kept reading, then dog-eared the rustled pages. Kiana got out of her bed and set in on her bookshelf, eager for the next day so she could finish it.
"I found it under the pier at the beach today, no one said it was theirs when I asked, so I brought it home," Kiana explained to her father the mysterious book. He glanced at the bookshelf before entering her room.
"That's nice, but it was your bedtime 30 minutes ago, why are you awake?" He asked Kiana, walking over to her snuggled-in figure. She smiled at him before talking.
"Well, I was reading obviously, but can you tell me a bedtime story? I need one to end my night!" She squealed with happiness, convincing her dad.
"Um, okay, I have a new one for you! Okay, I'll go get your mom, she'll wanna hear this one," He smiled at the thought before getting up and walking out of the room, soon coming back with Kiana's mother by his side.
"So, where should we start?" Her father looked at her mother with a questioning look. She just gave a healthy smile.
"Um, you tell me! It's always so fun when you tell me stories!" Kiana got hyper again, only to be shut down by her father.
"Hmm, well let's see..."
It was exactly 11:14 at night, don't ask me how I remember the time. Your mother was working at a grocery store near the college I went to for engineering. As a regular college student does, 20-year-old me needed some late-night instant noodles. As lucky as you are, your mother was working that night, and I so desperately went to that store she was working at.
"Well, I wasn't expecting to get any customers this late at night, studying for finals?" Your mother was, and still is, the prettiest thing I've ever seen. She rang up my instant noodles and I finally had the courage to ask the question.
"I have no idea how to ask this correctly, but are you taken?" I asked her with hope in my eyes I'm pretty sure I only did once. But lucky she wasn't.
"Well I'd usually say yes, but you're cute, so no," Your mother smirked at me and rested her head on her palm, waiting for my answer.
"Lucky me! Would you like to meet me at the park at 12:30 Saturday?" I smiled at her for a moment before her answer.
"Sure! Now scurry and study...?" Your mother hinted at my name then I gasped a bit.
"Oh- Sorry- It's Oliver! Oliver Wilson!" I gave her an odd 'sorry about that' smile, lucky she didn't take offense.
"Don't worry about it! By the way, I'm Lily, Lily Corduroy," Your mother continued, "I moved here about a year ago for a degree in English education."
"Lucky, I'm doing engineering, very stressful." she gave a chuckle before I started again, "Well I suppose I should let you work Lily, see you Saturday?"
"Absolutely!" She shooed me again as if telling me to leave. Two years of dating later, and flying to her small town to meet her parents & lumberjack brother, I asked her father for permission and proposed. She agreed with tears of happiness and another two years later you were a thing!
"Woah, you're really old daddy, when was that?" Kiana asked her father with a yawn to follow.
"May of 1992, Ki" He smiled at her tired before kissing her forehead, her mother doing the same.
"Goodnight Kiana, don't let the spider babies bite" They quietly walked out of the room while taking glances at their sleeping daughter. Almost like an angel brought her to the world, but a demon will take her out of it.
