Chapter 6

Peek at a Crush

"I'm not free because I'm always busy peeking at P'Newt,

but my heart is always free to wait for him."

- Baicha's Quote -

Our freshman orientation was quite different from other universities.

Well, it wasn't like a common orientation, more like collaboration activities, like the colour sports day[1], but no sports. We're more focused on academics and talent as it reflects our QU's reputation. It was an event called 'Open-U' or the university showcase, for any high school students, parents or outsiders who were interested to explore what the institute had to offer.

Not only for promoting the university, it also encouraged freshmen and seniors to work together and forge close bonds through the activities. It wasn't like a SOTUS system[2]. Since there were some disagreements about this system, QU has applied Open-U as the main compulsory activity instead of SOTUS.

In the second week of the semester, all students were required to prepare for the Open-U together. The progress of the work would affect our academic performance. To be honest, I couldn't be bothered and wanted to go home. I also wanted to peek at P'Newt, but I couldn't skip it.

I was sitting and feeling bored at the faculty yard, with less than twenty classmates. As I said, my faculty wasn't popular.

"Cha, do you know what Open-U is?" Ton asked me.

He was that Ton who replied to my status before. He was my closest classmate, but we're not that close. He was always busy and had to take up a part-time job to support his tuition fees because he was from the countryside and his family wasn't well-to-do.

The reason Ton had chosen this faculty was the same reason my parents had - they chose the university's reputation.

"I don't know the details, so I'm waiting for our seniors to explain them," I said.

"But last year when I came to this event, it looked like each faculty would set up a booth to promote their faculties. Lots of high school students came. Oh, and the opening ceremony was very grand. They had a performance by the drum majors and marching band. And what else? For the faculty academic booths, we can vote for the booth, and the booth that received the most votes would win the grand prize. Oh, and each faculty also had a stage performance. That was so much fun."

"Really?" Ton seemed very excited. "How was our faculty's performance?"

"Our faculty...ah..." I didn't want to mention it. "Okay...I guess."

As we all knew, our faculty was unpopular. Our booth last year was almost deserted. On the contrary, other faculty booths were full of people, especially the Faculty of Medicine. Don't even mention the performance. Other faculties had fully utilised their costumes and stage props - the best act was won by the Faculty of Communication Arts, while the best stage prop was won by the Faculty of Architecture. My faculty won nothing.

"Hello, freshmen! We are your seniors and will brief you about the Open-U preparations."

I looked at the seniors, their expressions showed...a lack of motivation, as if they just wanted to quickly get it over and done with. Freshmen like us were even more energetic than them, seriously.

"We've already finished the discussion and will assign the tasks now." The representative said.

"The third and fourth-year seniors will tend to the academic booth, and the sophomores and freshmen will prepare the stage performance together. Sophomores, please discuss this with the freshmen."
