atlas cook has no parents. he has no home. truthfully, he has no name.
he was born as project 122 in a laboratory under ardor city's government genetics lab. the idea was to see if ideal abilities could be bred into a child, and atlas was considered to be the first concrete result they'd had—seeing as every other child had died prematurely or not long after their birth. they wanted to create soldiers to protect ardor city from the drug problem, and atlas seemed to be the perfect solution.
cosmic energy manipulation proved to atlas's strong suit. whatever tests the government had used proved to work as he was given the overwhelming ability to create, shape, manipulate and absorb the energies of planets, stars, quasars, voids, nebulas, galaxies or anything else related to the cosmos—as well as all other forms of energy that exist in the universe on a cosmic scale. because of the otherworldly magic he possessed, the government renamed the project to "solstice."
atlas was immediately locked inside the government facility permanently for further testing. but what was "testing" for the scientists was "torture" for him. they wanted to figure out what exactly they had done so they could make more of him, but they quickly found out that they had made him too powerful. the simplest training sessions usually ended with at least one scientist killed and a training room destroyed.
the solstice project was eventually abandoned, and atlas was kept locked up in the laboratory, deemed too dangerous to be exposed to the public. but atlas wanted out, longing to go outside of the laboratory and see the world (he'd never even seen the sky before). he tried escaping, but failed every time, and was punished severely each time he tried to leave.
eventually, atlas snapped. when guards came by on their routine to hand out breakfast, he killed them and took his chance to escape. he used every bit of his abilities that he could, and in the end, the laboratory was lit up in flames and burned to the ground.
atlas was finally free, but he didn't know the first thing about assimilating into life in ardor city. at age eighteen, he was officially an adult, but he had no knowledge of what he was supposed to do.
thankfully, he made fast friends.
upon entering the heart of the city, he became aware of the heroes running around. atlas was initially homeless and found himself living in a dangerous back alley, and all it took was one guy trying to steal some of his clothes for atlas to almost send the wrath of the sun down on him; but before he could, the bluejay came and stopped him, saving the situation from becoming worse.
the bluejay helped atlas after seeing the peaks of power almost being displayed, deciding to take him under his wing and revealing himself as anthony scott. he set atlas up in ardor city and taught him the ways of being a normal person.
two years later, they still live together. and though atlas doesn't live on his own just yet, he's starting to get the hang of this hero thing.
