yara turan is the daughter of arthur and yvette turan. her father was the leader of the ivory court before his demise when his only child was seventeen. until she was ready to take over, the court was ruled by her uncle, abram turan. at age twenty, yara became known as the mistress of the court and sat in the second seat right beneath her uncle as she learned the ways of their syndicate.
the ivory court operates in dawn city, new jersey, where yara has been living her entire life. her duties as mistress of the court includes overseeing meetings and doing all in her power to keep the court from being found out.
yara put her duties aside as the mistress of the court after a mugger attempted to sexually assault her. of course, the ivory court got rid of the mugger, but yara was left traumatised. she understood that there was a severe problem in the city; danger lurked on every corner, especially for young women, and yara made it her mission to protect the innocent women of dawn city every time she went out.
wielding a katana, the public deemed yara 'the black dahlia,' naming her after the infamous black dahlia murder case in los angeles, which over time turned into s morality tale about the dangers that los angeles posed for young women. dawn city's young women thought the same, knowing that their city was dangerous.
yara is considered a hero dedicated to "taking back the streets" for women. this came after it was apparent that she was primarily targeting, beating up, and humiliating those who preyed on young females-namely pimps and drug dealers. yara's also seen as a hero rather than a vigilante, on par with few others operating in the city, and is very popular in the media. she was seen as a guardian angel, though she was deadly about her mission to clean up the streets, sometimes restarting to lethal tactics, but nonetheless trying to keep her victims unconscious.
