maverick madden was bred and born in dawn city. the blood of tussock—the western-most and poorest district of the city—runs deep in his veins. his father and mother, lincoln and meredith madden, raised him as best they could in a poor household with six sons running around, of which he was the youngest of.
living in a poor district, they could hardly make ends meet. every child had a job as soon as they could, some even earlier as newspaper boys. the eldest boys god involved with drug-running and weapons trafficking to help bring home larger wads of cash, which almost always went towards paying bills or buying groceries. each son eventually either moved out and forgot about their humble upbringings or died on the streets, their blood mingling with the stretch of crimson that dawn city's nights offered.
maverick was eventually the only one left in the house. he couldn't get in contact with his surviving brothers—who traded the city's violence for the beach or some international career—when his mother became ill. struck with cancer, she died before maverick turned sixteen, leaving him with a father who worked himself to death and would likely drink himself to an early grave. her last wishes were that her son would never fall into the same lifestyle her other children had, and though he promised, he knew it was likely he would find himself turning to his brothers's old friends for help.
to help his father pay rent, bills, and buy groceries, maverick got involved with the mob in dawn city, doing whatever he could to bring home wads of money for his father—who did not appreciate what his son was trying to do. maverick became quite proficient in guns, becoming a hitman for the mob at only age eighteen as he showed proficient skills.
it wasn't until he got a contract to kill one of his surviving brothers, samuel john (or sj) that things became rough. he refused the contract, and another hitman took it up instead, killing both samuel john and lincoln madden because of maverick's refusal. he became an enemy of the mob, but he decided not to leave dawn city.
instead, maverick stayed, finding a whole in the wall apartment in chinatown to stay in while he slowly chipped away at the members of the mob in search of their leader. he made it his goal in life's goal to rid the city of the villains that bled it dry, and he left a trail of bodies in his wake.
the people of dawn city did not agree with his methods, though they couldn't argue with the results. maverick continues to strike fear into the hearts of the civilians of the city, but he does so gladly if it means getting him one step closer to finding out who killed his family.
