The heat was merciless as it beat down upon my skin as I carried heavy bricks for the house were building for the day.  Although it was only a short walk from the pile of bricks to the back of the house, the added pressure from the heat made it seem like it was a mile.  I was struggling with the weight, grunting every now and then throughout the duration of my walk. Suddenly, some of the weight seemed to have been lifted slightly.  Then more of it.  I looked down to realize some of my bricks were missing.  It was only then that I noticed a figure standing next to me who proceeded to take my burden into his own arms.  I looked up to see the angelic face of none other than Niall.

He smiled at me as he continued to take the bricks from me.  I was aggravated and annoyed at his gesture.  It sent tingles throughout my body as I took the bricks back into my own arms.

Niall looked at me puzzled.  “I was going to help you with that,” he said kindly.

“Well, I don’t need any of your help.  I was fine with the bricks on my own.  I had it under control,” I spat back.

“Sorry,” he apologized.  “It just looked like you were struggling a great deal with them.”

“Well, I wasn’t.  What? You think that because I’m a girl that I can’t carry bricks?  That I’m too fragile?  That men can only do certain things and women can’t?  That’s just sexist!” I spoke, infuriated.

“Well, no… I just… I just wanted to help that’s all,” he sheepishly replied as he started to turn away.  “I was just trying to be nice and gentlemanly,” he continued with his back towards me, walking away.

I stood there, watching him walk away, bricks still in hand.  The anger I had just felt was melting away as a wave of sadness crashed over me.  I thought about what had just happened as I continued to finish the task at hand, getting the bricks to the house.  Throughout the rest of the afternoon, my thoughts drifted back to that moment with Niall.  Maybe I had overreacted just a tad.  Okay, a lot.  It’s just that I had been brought up in such a strong, independent household that I rarely had to rely on anyone else.  My sister and I were taught to be independent, to not rely on any man for anything.  If you wanted to go somewhere, do something, you had to find a way to get there or do it yourself.  No one was going to simply hand it out to you or get you to where you wanted to be.  No, you had to work for it and you had to work hard.

As my thoughts came full circle, I realized that, yes, I had been way too hard on Niall.  He was just trying to be nice and helpful while I was being a self-righteous, feministic cow.  I would have to apologize to him for my outburst when I saw him next.

It had been a long, tiresome day, but, hey I wasn’t complaining.  What better way to end it off than to light a nice fire and to just kick back, unwind and let the slight breeze carry our voices into the night.  Luckily Scarlett had brought her guitar and played it while the boys sang effortlessly. Throughout the night some of my favourite songs were played, including Collide by Howie Day and I’ll Be by Edwin McCain.   As the boys sang those soothing tunes that caressed the night, I got the nerve to get up from where I was sitting, walked around the fire and over to Niall.
