I was restless as I tossed and turned in my cot. It was hopeless trying to fall asleep as my head was clouded with competing thoughts. I finally gave up, letting out an exasperated sigh as I got out of bed.
My eyes quickly readjusted to the surrounding darkness. The only things that seemed to light my way were the moon, stars and a nearby lamp post. I spotted the tree nearby, the one I had previously eyed. Its strong trunk intertwined its roots with the ground. The thick branches stretching up towards the night sky. As I approached it, full of wonder and awe, I couldn’t help but remember the last time I had ever climbed a tree.
I must have been around 7 years old. I remember it quite vividly. My sister and I loved playing in our huge backyard with our playground set and tree to climb in the very back. We would spend whole afternoons, even days, letting our imaginations run wild. We pretended to be everything from astronauts flying to the moon, agents on a top secret mission, explorers on a jungle safari and everything in between. Often times we’d play these games with our neighbours. Whether it was in our backyard or theirs, we would use that tree as some sort of portal to our secret world.
Unexpectedly, I heard footsteps down below. I glanced down to see a head of familiar blonde hair.
“Pssst,” I whispered, attracting his attention.
He stood still, looking around, wondering where that voice had come from. He shook his head, possibly thinking he had imagined the voice. He continued to walk on.
“Pssst, Niall! Up here,” I shout-whispered.
He glanced up confusedly, eyebrow raised. His eyes lit up and a smile slowly spread across his face when he recognized me up in the tree.
“Had trouble sleeping too, huh?” he teased.
I laughed. “You could say that. Come on up and join me,” I encouraged.
“How did you even get up there?” he questioned dubiously.
“I climbed lots of trees as a kid,” I shrugged.
“You mean you’re really part monkey,” he said as he attempted to grab hold of the lowest branch and swing himself up.
“Do you need some help down there?” I called, watching him struggle.
“No, no…It’s…okay. I’ve…got it,” he managed to say between grunts.
Just as I was about to move down to help him, he miraculously pulled himself up. He sat on the branch, leaning against the trunk, trying to catch his breath. I tried to hold my laughter in but failed miserably.
“So, are you just going to stay down there?” I chided.
“No. I’ll be up in a bit. That took a lot out of me okay? That was way harder than it looks,” he admitted.
