Modern-Day Division

So this is one that is likely to be a bit divisive, but I think it will allow me to finally give my definitive opinion on one of this franchise's most polarizing features: the modern-day. "What makes me wonder about all the people that are all, 'Let's just drop the modern story!' Have they forgotten what the series is even about? Or are they treating the AC series as a massive history wank?"

So, for starters, I will not deny there have been times where I have felt that same sentiment too. As for whether or not it was born out of the modern-day narrative dropping in quality, or if I just stopped liking Desmond at some point. But I won't deny there have been times where I definitely felt the sentiment of, "a game series that prides itself on exploring history really shouldn't have any sort of modern day segment period."

Looking back now, I don't think that mindset is entirely fair. At its best, AC was about how different generations influenced one another, both in the past and the present. Say what you will about Desmond, or even Layla Hassan, but I don't think it's impossible to write compelling stories about people in our time and place reacting to and learning about the time periods and historical events we think we know.

As for Desmond's story, I agree he was killed off too soon, but I also think he was broken out of Abstergo too soon as well. I feel like something like that whole, muscling through Abstergo sequence in three would have felt a lot more impactful if he spent more than one game trapped in that facility. My basic idea was that he could have spent the whole of both one and two and in Brotherhood it's a whole process of getting him out of the building that ends with him being put into a coma, just in time for Revelations. Also, to hell with that stupid plot twist of Lucy betraying the gang, just let her stay with them and have William sacrifice himself at the end of three as opposed to Desmond.

So, that's about it. There you have it, my definitive take on the modern-day. Feel free to think otherwise as long as your nice about it 😉
