People have been slowly but surely losing their ability to keep track of the story of Assassin's Creed for years now, as the series gradually diluted into different genres and styles, it seemed to lose its own overarching narrative that it once had, and it can be difficult to pinpoint when that exactly happened. One confessor gives their opinion. "In my eyes, AC works like this: AC1, then AC2, then AC2 part 2 (Brotherhood), then AC2 part 3 (Revelations), then AC3, then AC4, then AC4 expansion packs Freedom Cry and Rogue, and then Unity and Syndicate aren't related to the main line of AC1-AC4."
Hmm, very impressive, and you won't hear much in the way of an argument from me...although might I ask if Liberation would technically be considered an AC3 expansion pack?
Outside of that, yeah, it's funny to me that Rogue at least tried to tie Unity into the rest of the series by having him be the murderer of Arno's father, as if we hadn't gone through the revenge plot three times at that point in this series alone. That, in addition to a bunch of random references to Altaïr that don't amount to anything and come off as haphazardly thrown together attempts to make Unity and especially Arno himself relevant to the rest of the series, as he otherwise has no meaningful connection to any pervious protagonist except Shay (we don't even know if he's related to Desmond). That, in addition to the fact that Arno as a character is literally EVERY pervious mainline protagonist before him plus Aveline (French) thrown together in a blender in both personality and storybeats, with the cherry on top being his face, which just looks like a cleaned up, more handsome version of the face of every other male npc from Revelations:
Honestly, not making Unity about Connor, or even about Aveline for once, was another MASSIVE mistake Ubisoft made with this series.Syndicate at least tried a bit harder, with having us visit a replica of Edward's mansion and looking for something he left behind. But if they wanted to go that route, then why didn't they have Edward be to Syndicate what Altaïr was to Revelations? Why not have Edward be the inspiration for the Frye twins to go to London in the first place and have the modern-day protagonist go through the same bleeding effect issue Desmond went through in AC2 but it's much more severe, allowing for us to explore Edward's life after Black Flag?
Those are just my thoughts. Overall I agree, even though I have a greater respect for Syndicate than for Unity, I'll make no argument in either of them not contributing much to the franchise, and I stand by my statements on both games.
