" We're not together, he's a family friend, we came to have a little walk in the park nearby, I'm from Bluedale, not very far from here". She covered her mouth holding in a small laugh.
" I'm sorry, you guys seemed like a couple. Oh and I'm from Bluedale too, my son and his family live there, he tells me that my granddaughter will be getting married to a foreign businessman next year," When she finished she apologized for overstating and we assured her that it was ok and we didn't mind.
It's not every day that you meet someone like her.
She excused herself and within no time she was back with two hot chocolates in hand. I thanked her and by the time we were done with our hot drinks, it was time to leave.
I waved her goodbye, she seemed lonely and I felt bad, I felt bad for leaving a sad sweet old lady to her empty cafe.
♧
The bus ride back to Bluedale seemed shorter than the one earlier, something about going home always made the time move faster. Allesandro and I sat in silence, somehow we had both communicated to each other that silence was what we needed after a long day.
The rain poured onto the road around us. When we finally stepped off the bus, we ran to his cafe. I hadn't been there in quite some time and now that I'm there, all I'm doing is grabbing an umbrella and leaving.
"A friend of mine is going to drop my car here, I'll drop you off at school," He's being nice but I'd honestly prefer to walk in the rain with an umbrella. No particular reason but me just wanting to be in this weather.
" It's fine, this umbrella will be fine. I'll walk," He wanted to challenge me on my words but the look in my eyes told him not to challenge me on it, told him a walk in the rain is just what I needed.
When I stepped outside with the umbrella open above my head the rain soaked me from all sides, and that's when I remembered that I brought a backpack with me, I must've left it on the bus or at the park, shit, my phone.
Using my free hand I began patting down my sides in search of my phone. My hand got stuck on something in my shorts pocket. Reaching into my pocket and low and behold, it was my phone.
It was soaked but water isn't the issue when you have a waterproof phone, I mean at least I have the phone right? I made an attempt to turn it on but all that came up was 0℅ please charge.
"Ugh!" I said, shoving it into my top. Would've been better off if I'd lost it along with my backpack.....
It didn't take me long to get to school, the school gate was meters ahead of me and though the rain clouded my vision I could still make out the figure of a crouching person by the gate. Now, who the hell is dumb enough to stay out here in the rain?
Quickening my steps I rushed to the person stooping down with my umbrella held over their head.
" Hey," Hey I said shaking them. " Are you ok?" The person slowly lifted their head and suddenly I was staring into familiar eyes, Aaron, why is it always him?
" Lily is that you?" He asked his eyes scrunching in confusion. I reached down to squeeze his hand yes when his free palm cupped my cheek as he searched my eyes for some familiarity.
" God Lily, I was so worried. I asked the school about you and they said they called your mom and that you were fine but I know better. She wouldn't let anyone know if something had happened to you,"
I wanted to cuss him out for staying here in the rain when he knows how sick he gets the moment the rain catches him but I couldn't not when he looked so pitiful in front of me.
He wrapped his arms around me and I took the moment to pull him up from his crouching position. With his hand wrapped around my shoulder, I pulled him inside signed our names in and dragged him along with me to our dorm room.
I didn't sleep until around 5 am, he had a raging fever and a terrible case of the sniffles. He kept complaining about being cold so I wrapped him up in all the blankets I had on the bed and turned the ac up. I was burning up in the room but it didn't matter because he was sick.
In some sick twisted way we were both lucky to have each other.
