(Tommy pov, third person.)
Tommy was confused and concerned as he pulled back his bedroom curtain to look at who was at Penny's front door. She had seemed so scared when she hung up, and Tommy was tense with dread and worry. It got even worse when he recognized the man at her door as the escaped convict.
It was easy enough to tell, he was still wearing his bright orange jumpsuit, most likely he hadn't had any time to change. Unfortunately for him, Tommy's parents weren't home, so he couldn't get the help of any adult other than those of 911 and, knowing Penny, she'd most likely called them already. He had to help, but how?
(Penny pov, third person)
Penny did as the lady on the phone said, and stayed away from the door with the phone while hiding in the master bathroom in the cabinet under the sink. The banging at the front door was steadily getting louder, and Penny was crying with fear.
The lady tried to calm Penny down by telling the girl a little about herself. Turns out the lady's name was Mable and she was 24 with a baby girl on the way. While Penny was happy Mabel was trying to help, the rambling on didn't help.
The banging stopped suddenly, and Penny wondered if that was a good or bad thing. "The banging stopped, Mabel." She whispered. "The police aren't there yet, so he either left or is trying to find another way in, stay where you are." Mabel ordered.
Penny gasped as she heard banging from the room next to her, which was her bedroom. "He's trying to get in through my window." Penny whispered. She heard her bedroom window open, and then something solid hitting flesh. A man's voice cursed and something hit someone again.
It sounded like someone was hitting her dad with something. Then, she remembered how both Tommy and her had a collection of small rocks to throw at the others' window when they wanted to talk or come over. Was Tommy throwing rocks at her dad?
She suddenly heard familiar British cursing/yelling, and knew that was Tommy. Under different circumstances, she would've found this hilarious, but not in this case. She began to worry instead. What if her dad attacked Tommy? Would the police arrive in time before that happened? Penny could hear her dad yelling at Tommy to stop, but Tommy yelled back.
Penny heard her window shut and knew her dad was climbing down to go attack Tommy. Panic rose in her chest at the thought and she climbed out of the cabinet and ran to her window prepared to fight.
A welcome sight met her eyes as she saw three police cars pull into her driveway and six policemen climbed quickly out of the cars with guns and bullhorn. They yelled at my dad threatening to shoot if he didn't comply and get in the car.
Penny felt immense relief as she looked across the two houses to see Tommy, shaken but unscathed, looking back at her. "I won't let him hurt you." He mouthed and Penny smiled and mouthed "I swear you are just too good I don't fucking deserve you." Tommy smirked and mouthed back "Damn right you don't" which just made Penny smile even more and roll her eyes.
Penny looked back at the scene below her and saw her dad, handcuffed, getting into the back of a police car. He looked up at her and she flipped him off, hatred burning in her eyes. Penny breifly saw her dad scowl before the car door slammed shut and the policemen drove away.
Penny sighed a breath of relief and curled up into a ball on her bed and sobbed. She wasn't exactly sure why, since the event was over. Maybe because the incident had been traumatizing, maybe because it had brought back painful memories. Whatever the reason, Penny felt broken.
She wrapped her arms around him as soon as he was within reach, not even caring the window was still open and blowing cold winter air and snow into her room. All she wanted right now was to cuddle with her favorite person until she didn't feel broken.
And Tommy felt the same way.
