"Sure. Let's risk our lives. Normal Wednesday."

————————

"...We're not bringing all that."

You deadpanned when you spotted Varian, who was carrying a very heavy, stuffed, completely overfilled bag.

"But I need-"

"No."

"But what if-"

"No. Varian, we're walking the whole way, all that luggage will slow us down. ...Why are we even going there of all places? Wouldn't it make much more sense if we checked-"

"Well, according to Demanitus' notes, they have a giant collection of books about magic - or better said, science we don't understand yet - and I think we'll find some leads there. Don't worry, I've already chosen a good route, it shouldn't take too long."

You looked at his translations.

"...The royal library there has a significantly big amount of books that have helped me with my work..."

Yeah, okay.

"About your stuff, Varian, I know you'll do fine without it. You can make-do with the things we find, I know you can. You're talented. You've got a great head on your shoulders."

"...Thanks."

He eyed you up and down slowly, lips forming into a thin line and eyes squinting as if he were looking into a bright light. This was the first time since he'd freed you where you've been kind to him.

Of course, you didn't treat him cruelly, but your eyes looked cold and you had spoken with indifference ever since your birthday.

So he felt suspicious of you when you suddenly reassured him.

Man, the betrayal had really messed with your head, huh?

He wasn't sure whether you had simply lost faith in humanity, regarding everyone with a critical stare and seeing that flicker of evil within them, or whether you chose to distance yourself as a sort of defense mechanism to not get hurt.

Maybe you thought that you couldn't trust anyone anymore?

If you had no one close to you, they wouldn't be able to hurt you.

Betrayal could only come from people you thought dearly of, it wouldn't be painful otherwise.

So maybe that was your thought-process?

But Varian didn't quite get that.

He had been betrayed too. And yes, all humans are different and in conclusion they have different reactions,

but wasn't your reaction kind of... irrational?

Yes, sure, one could argue that strong emotions don't let one think straight.

And, well, Varian didn't think that you were thinking straight at the moment.

Without anyone at your side, it was bound to get lonely at some point. No matter how independent you are, no matter how often and how long you tell yourself that you don't need anyone.

You weren't the type to stay alone.

It's not like Varian was planning on leaving anytime soon. He wanted to stick around, and right now, to get through to you.

You were important to him and he made it his missions to get you to rely on him too, to trust him like he did with you.

...Although he didn't quite understand what exactly is was that you were trying to achieve.
