I saw you in the back of my show last night
Standing underneath the exit sign
I know it wasn't really you though
'Cause you were always in the front row
And I've been looking for love online
And maybe some of them are real good guys
They're never gonna be like you though
You set the bar above the moon so
I don't wanna be 20-something
And still in my head about
17 in my bedroom talking
You said that by now we'd
Paint the walls of our shared apartment
You're still everything I want and
I think we could work it out
So what are you doing now?
Now that you finally got the job you like
I'm making money off the songs I write
I know you said that I could call you
I wonder if you wanna call too
Now that the future doesn't feel so far
It doesn't seem as wrong to want what's ours
And after everything that's happened
I wanna put it in the past tense
'Cause I don't wanna be 20-something
And still in my head about
17 in my bedroom talking
You said that by now we'd
Paint the walls of our shared apartment
You're still everything I want and
I think we could work it out
So what are you doing now?
Are you with somebody?
Should I even care?
Know you're not as happy
As when I was there
In your faded T-shirt
That I've kept this long
I still hear you laughing
When I put it on
I know
I don't wanna be 20-something
And still in my head about
17 in my bedroom talking
You said that by now we'd
Paint the walls of our shared apartment
You're still everything I want and
I think we could work it out
So what are you doing now?

two years and three months after

opening night was a huge success. two years ago brooke never thought she would be opening for taylor swift, an artist she had looked up to for years. as she looked around, her los angeles friends were there supporting her, and two of her boston friends. chris and nick were in the front row, next to an empty seat, beyond proud of their best friend.

after matt didn't show, brooke told herself she would stop thinking about him. she tried, she reached out. that was all she could do, the rest was up to matt. he made his choice.

she could have sworn that she saw the boy in the back, underneath the exit sign. whenever brooke sang back home, matt was always in the front row. she knew it wasn't him.

little did she know, it was him.

matt had no desire to go and watch his ex girlfriend sing songs written about him. however, when he found himself outside, his whole body betrayed him, and he found himself standing in the back, just far enough away so that brooke could never see him.

brooke had downloaded tinder and started going on dates again. there was one who seemed like a good guy, but once the date ended, she never messaged him again. he wasn't matt.

she hated how she was twenty years old and thinking about how when they were seventeen, they had said they would have gotten an apartment together by now. they would have painted the walls together, and matt would have laughed as brooke managed to get paint everywhere. they would have been starting their forever.

matt and brooke both had begun their lives. matt had the job of his dreams, making videos with his brothers and making people laugh. brooke's music career was taking off and she could finally say she was making money off the songs she wrote. now that matt lived in los angeles, it seemed like all the reasons they had broken up had disappeared completely. they wouldn't have to be long distance, they could go back to before. she wanted to put everything in the past with matt and focus on the future, but she couldn't do that when he didn't want to talk to her.

brooke still had matt's faded tee shirt hidden deep in her closet. getting rid of it was nearly impossible, as every time she tried, all she could picture was his laugh when she put it on that one night. chris had gotten spaghetti sauce all over brooke's favorite white shirt, although the girl should have known something would happen when he suggested they make spaghetti. immediately, brooke made him bleach the shirt, and matt found it hilarious how angry his girlfriend was over some spilled sauce.

all she wanted to know was what matt was doing.
