Today was the day.

Beca was about to show these boys that a girl could play soccer just as well as them.

If not, better.

She was about to show them who the man really was.

*****

Beca was walking to the locker room with Jesse.
Her nerves must've been obvious because Jesse decided to give her a pep talk.

He patted Beca's shoulder, "You're going to do great dude. We've all seen how hard you've been working for this."

Beca smiled, "Thanks. I just don't wanna fuck it up."

"You won't. You're the missing piece of our team. We've never gelled this well before."

Beca rolled her eyes, "You're just trying to chill me out."

Jesse shook his head, "I'm serious. Last year, we fought all the time. During practice...games...but you like mellow us out."

"Well...thanks," Beca offered genuinely.

This is why she liked Jesse.
Underneath all his nerdy quirks, he was a genuine guy.

He appreciated what Beca or Brock brought to the table with the team.
And with his friends.

Beca never judged him when he would go on emotional rants or sing stupid show tunes.

They had formed a real friendship.
One Beca hoped she wouldn't lose when the truth came out.

*****

When Beca took the field with her teammates, she immediately felt as ease.

This was the safety and security that soccer brought to her.
This was the reason that she was being Brock.
She felt at home.

Beca glanced up into the stadium before the whistle blew.
She was unconsciously searching for her favorite redhead.

Finally, Beca spotted her.
And she couldn't fight the smile that spread across her face as their eyes locked onto each other.

Chloe gave her a small wave, and Beca's heart skipped.

Beca was ready to show these boys what a girl could do with a soccer ball.
But she also had an ulterior motive.

She wanted to show Chloe why she was so obsessed with this game.
Why she had told Chloe that she couldn't have any distractions.
Share her passion with her...

Maybe impress her too?

Then the whistle blew.
And Beca took off.

*****

The game would be over in 2 minutes.
The score was 0-0.
But the Illyrian team had been playing great.

Like Jesse said, they were really gelling together.
They had been dominating the entire game.
The ball had been in their possession for the majority of the runtime.

Unfortunately, the opposing team's goalkeeper was a beast.
He was the only reason his team was even still in the game.

Beca had gotten off several shots on him, but he was quick.
And tall.
All excellent components of a goalkeeper.

Beca was currently dribbling towards the 18-yard box.

There was only one defender between her and the goal.
But she was pushed from behind.

As she tumbled to the ground, she heard the referee blow his whistle.
Signaling a foul.

This is it, Beca thought.

Beca was helped to her feet by Luke.

Luke whispered, "I'll aim for the far post. Get your head ready, Mitchell."

Beca nodded as she ran to take her position.

The referee blew the whistle.
Luke raised his hand.
Beca started her run to the far post; a defender hot on her heels.

Luke kicked a beautiful ball towards Beca's path.

Beca jumped; curving her head towards the goal as the ball hit the top of her head.

Beca's momentum brought her to the ground, but she could hear the cheering crowd.

The ball had sailed into the goal; past the beast of a goalkeeper.

Luke and Jesse scooped Beca up.

"Hell yeah," Jesse yelled as he patted Beca's back.

Luke high-fived Beca as they ran back to their side of the field.

After a minute more of play, the game was over.

Beca had done it.
She'd won the game for Illyria.

Her teammates circled around her.
Chanting "Mitchell's the man!"

And she was.

Beca was already feeling electric when her eyes traveled to meet Chloe's.

Chloe was jumping up and down.
Grabbing onto Aubrey's arm, who was smiling yet less enthused.

Beca beamed at Chloe, who shot her two thumbs up.

Such a weird, Beca happily thought.

In that moment, Beca really felt alive.
And this entire scheme seemed to be Beca's destiny.
