Dan POV:
I sat in my seat, not listening to the teacher babbling on about nonsense. Then, he walked in. Just strolled on up to the teacher, handed him a note and sat right next to me. There were plenty of other seats, why did he choose the one next to mine? I rolled my eyes, annoyed and turned back to doodling on my notebook. The new kid was strange, that's for sure.
"Hey." He said, almost nervously. I barely looked at him and nodded slightly. I knew I was being rude, but I couldn't help it. No one said hi to me, that's just not how it worked in this school.
"Um, I'm Phil. I'm new here, and I was wondering if you could show me around a bit? The secretary said that you had a similar schedule to mine, so I was just wondering..." He trailed off, noticing the way I looked hostile and probably really rude. I just nodded, confused as to why I even said yes. The teacher seemed to notice how no one was paying attention to him. The word that I heard next absolutely devastated me.
"Love." The teacher said, leaning against his desk, "What do you guys think of it? Do you love it, hate it? Are any of you in love as we speak?" A few pairs of students looked over at each other and smiled. I scoffed, rolling my eyes and crossing my arms. The teacher looked taken aback.
"Daniel, have you ever been in love?" The teacher asked, looking at me. I rolled my eyes once more and uncrossed my arms.
"I don't believe in love, sir. It's kind of dumb to be honest." I declared. A few girls and even one or two guys gasped at me and glared. I bit my lip. Phil was staring at me and I was extremely uncomfortable. I nodded.
"I think that love is just a thing that teenagers seem to believe in. It's not real, just a bunch of teenager hormones and stuff. The whole idea of love is unrealistic. It's just a myth that people seem to believe in." I stated. Girls scoffed at me and rolled their eyes. The teacher seemed actually interested in what I was saying for once.
"But, Daniel, how can adults be in love after all this time? That certainly can't be teen hormones going haywire." He questioned, raising his eyebrow. I had indeed thought of this before.
"Yes, that question came to mind a while ago. But I think that since most people believed in love whenever they were younger, their brain has convinced them that it is real. People just hold on to false hopes until they believe it is real." I argued, sitting back in my seat. Phil was gaping at me. I just shrugged.
"Alright, Daniel. Thank you for that input," the teacher said. I rolled my eyes. "But now, we will get started on our new project. Has anybody heard of Romeo and Juliet before?" About all the hands in the class shot up. Most of them probably hadn't even read the damn book, yet they were still raising their hands. The teacher nodded, getting a pile of books out from under his desk. I sighed. I seriously didn't want to do this.
Once everyone got their books, they got together with their partners and started reading. The book was excruciatingly boring, and I absolutely hated reading it. Phil seemed genuinely interested though, basically burying his head into the stupid book. I rolled my eyes. He's literally so weird. So unusual. I don't know why, but something made me want to know him more. He seemed so interesting. Phil caught me staring and I blushed and looked away. What is up with me?
"Okay, so should I come over tonight or something? So we can actually get started on this?" He asked, touching my knee. I dodged his touch and nodded. I wasn't used to this. Someone actually talking to me, touching me, caring for me. It was weird, and I didn't like it one bit. I felt different around him, and I barely knew him.
