CHAPTER ONE
" Sam, mate, where are you? It's past twelve at night, you had us worried sick," Ross says as he picks up the phone.
I sigh. " Hiya, mate. Look, sorry, I meant to call you. It's just I found this person on the path hurt and had to take them to hospital."
I can almost hear the smirk in his voice when he says, " Is this 'person' a female by any chance?"
Frowning, I reply, " Aye. How did you know?"
" Lads!" Ross calls into the distance, turning away from the phone so I can only just hear him. " Sam's swung a bird!"
I roll my eyes. " Ross. It's not like that. Honestly."
" Aye, aye, sure it's no," he laughs. " D'ye need a lift home?"
" Yeah, that would be great." I say, glancing over at Jamie's hospital room, the door slightly askew.
" Right, well, Bazz will be there in thirty minutes. And don't bring your lassie friend with ye."
I roll my eyes but can't stop a laugh from escaping my mouth. " Naw, I'll no, mate. See ye soon."
" Aye. See you soon."
I hang up after that, deciding that the conversation has gone on long enough. I wonder whether Barry and Craig have gone to bed yet. Ross doesn't live with us, he lives with his wife, but probably he came over when he heard I wasn't home yet.
A slight cough comes from Jamie's hospital room and I smile slightly, walking over.
" Hey," I whisper, sliding the curtain open.
" Sam," she yawns, rubbing her eyes tiredly.
I chuckle. " Tired?" She nods. " I don't blame you. After why happened tonight, I would be, too."
For the first time, I notice what she's wearing. Black Dr. Martens. I'm wearing those, too. A green parka jacket. I'm wearing a navy parka. I laugh slightly at the coincidence.
" What's funny?" she giggles, tilting her head to the side. She looks so adorable like that; innocent.
I shake my head. " Oh, nothing."
Jamie shakes her head, scooting herself down the bed and poking me with the toe of her right boot. " Tell me."
I smile widely. " Just, well, we're wearing the same thing. Almost, anyway."
She frowns, squinting her eyes at my clothes first, then her own. " Oh!" she laughs. " We are!"
I grin and sit down on the edge of the bed. She looks down at the white cast round her left wrist and I laugh. She pouts fakely. " Don't laugh. It hurts."
Quickly, I frown. " I'm sorry."
She laughs again. Her laugh is like music to my ears. " I'm only joking. But aye, it does hurt."
Concerned, I reach out and place a hand on her knee. " Do you want me to get a doctor to give you some pain killers?"
Jamie shakes her head. " Nah, it's fine. Do you know when I can go home?"
I shrug. " I don't know. But you're not walking. It's half one in the morning. I'll have my mate drive you."
She smiles. " You're really sweet, Mr Sam. . .?"
" McTrusty," I finish. She chuckles slightly. I grin. " What?"
" That's a cute name - McTrusty. Goes with your cute face."
I feel myself blush. " Oh. . . erm. . . thank you." She smiles, showing her shiny pearls. " Do you. . . do you think I could get your number before we leave?"
She blushes crimson. A slight smile gracing her small features, she looks around and spots a marker pen that she used for paperwork earlier. She tears a corner of the paperwork off and scribbles something down, before handing it to me.
In perfect cursive, she has written:
for my Prince Charming,
076543 23145.
I grin. I'd really like to keep in touch with Jamie, even just as friends. She has an immense sense of humour and I know the guys would love her personality just as much I do.
She puts up a finger quickly. " Wait. To win the right to text me, you have to pass a short test." I laugh, amused but slightly nervous. " Top three bands?"
I sigh in relief. Easy. " Easy, peasy. One, Biffy Clyro. Two, Kasabian. Three, Oasis."
She grins, obviously happy with my choice. " Obviously I was joking, but if I hadn't been, you would've most definitely passed, mate. Well done."
I bow jokingly and she giggles.
" Hello, Miss. . . Sommers, I believe?" a kind voice says from behind us. I turn and see a doctor in a white jacket, smiling at us.
" You would be correct," Jamie says, hopping off the hospital bed and standing as straight as her back can take. I smile subtly at her.
" Well, you and your. . . boyfriend are free to leave."
I feel my cheeks heat up and, when I look across at her, Jamie has a red tinge to her cheeks, too.
" No, um. No, see. Um, I'm not. I'm not her boyfriend," I stutter. " She's - we're just. . . friends."
The doctor smirks. " I see. Well, I'll leave you to it."
As he leaves the room, I see him wink slightly.
" Well," I say, turning to Jamie, " that was. . . interesting."
" Indeed," she replies, raising her dark eyebrows.
" Did you have anything with you?" I ask curiously.
She sighs. " No. It was all stolen at the party."
" Oh," I say blandly. " By whom, may I ask?"
" My sorry excuse for a 'friend'," she frowns, stepping towards me. " Now, let's go."
Barry is waiting outside in his red mini. He honks the horn as we leave the hospital, and I raise my hand in recognition.
" Bazz is over there," I tell Jamie, nodding towards one of my mates.
She smiles up at me. " Thanks for this. I don't know how I would've gotten home if you hadn't offered."
" It's no problem," I grin.
" Barry," I say, opening the door to the passengers side and sliding the chair forward, " this is Jamie."
Barry tilts his head back to see her and nods. " Alright, Sweetheart?"
I roll my eyes, making way for Jamie to climb in. She laughs. " Aye, I'm alright. Yourself?"
" She doesn't actually care, Barry, she's just being polite," I call, climbing in beside Jamie and sliding the door and seat back into place.
Barry rolls his eyes, beginning to drive. " Just you watch it, wee yin."
Jamie directs us to her house and Bazz stops just outside of it. Turns out, she doesn't live far away at all. On the outskirts of Glasgow, actually. " Do you need me to walk you to your door?" I ask.
" Naw, ah'm fine," she smiles, climbing out. " Thanks for the ride, gents. And as for you, Sam, I'm expecting a text." And then she walks away.
