CHAPTER FOUR
The sun hits us like a brick wall as we walk onto the streets of Glasgow. Jamie winces at the contact of the sun and her eyes and I immediately fish my Ray Bans out of my pocket and hand them to her.
" Are you sure you don't need these?" she asks hesitantly.
I nod, laughing. " Of course. Now put em on. We can't have those beautiful eyes being ruined."
If I didn't know better, I might think she was blushing right now.
She excepts the glasses and slips them on, hiding her eyes. We walk down the street of Glasgow quietly, before she asks, " Can we go to the park?"
I know it's a risky move. Paparazzi might snap a picture of us when she doesn't even know. So I change her mind.
" Come with me," I say, grabbing her hand and leading her away from the busy streets and down an alleyway.
" Where are we going?" she asks, sounding nervous.
" Somewhere only I know about," I tell her.
Soon enough, we come out in a wood. The trees around us form a perfect pathway, and I lead her through it and out into a small circle of trees. There is a sofa in the centre, which is shielded by the rain by the surrounding trees, and a tree just behind it that has wooden steps and a perfect branch for sitting on attached to it.
Jamie gasps as I drop her hand. " This is amazing, Sam!"
I smile, glancing back at her as I walk towards the tree.
" How do you know about this place?" she questions, following me.
I shrug. " Found it once a few years ago. I come here when I need some space, or when I want to think for a while."
Steadying myself on the tree, I pull myself up onto the first step and carefully climb until I reach the branch. I sit on the branch precariously and help Jamie up. Her hand reaches desperately for mine as she slips, almost falling from a few metres high, but I keep her in place.
When she is finally on the branch beside me, I can feel her body press up against my own. It makes my cheeks heat up.
" Sam," she whispers, gazing out at the surrounding trees. " Why did you bring me here?"
I smile, deciding that it's time. " I brought you here because I have to tell you something," I say. Jamie turns her head to look at me expectantly, and I grasp her hand. " I didn't want to tell you before because I've had a lot of woman befriend - or date - me because of this fact alone, and I didn't want it to be like that with you."
She nods understandingly, removing her sunglasses to look me straight in the eye.
" I'm in a band. I'm the lead singer of Twin Atlantic." I say slowly, carefully, making sure I don't have to repeat myself and embarrass myself even more.
Jamie giggles. " I know."
" What?" What does she mean she knows? I haven't told her and not realised, have I?
Her face softens as she gazes at me. She reaches out and gently brushes my cheek with her fingertips. " I've known all along, Sam. You think I didn't know that Sam McTrusty saved me in the middle of the night and carried me to hospital? Of course I knew. But I also knew that you would tell me when you were ready. Although I expected it to come up a little sooner than this, rushing you into it is something I would never dream of doing."
I take a moment to process the words. And when I have, I feel a large smile spread across my features. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever been so kind to me. Most people who know who I am go crazy when they even just see me, so why did she keep quiet so long?
Quickly, I pull her into a tight hug. The feeling is strange and foreign. I mean, I literally met her less than forty - eight hours ago.
" Thank you," I whisper into her shoulder before letting her go.
Laughing slightly, she replies, " You don't need to thank me." I grin.
We spend another half hour staring out at the beautiful scene in front of us, watching the birds swoop down and the squirrels scuttle across the forest floor and through the trees. When we finally decided it's time to go, I climb out of the tree, and Jamie jumps down. I catch her mid fall, careful not to hurt her wrist, and we begin walking back into town.
" I'll take you home, okay?" I suggest as we enter the multiple story car park.
Jamie smiles. " It would save me from getting the bus."
I grin back. " Then it's settled."
She smiles back and we climb the stairs to the third floor. My car sits proud, shiny, and brand - spanking - new, in the corner of the car park. Jamie's eyes widen when she sees it.
" Oh, wow! It's beautiful!" she shouts, stroking it carefully.
I laugh. " Hmm, it's my baby."
Jamie laughs and I unlock the car. She climbs in and I rush round to the other side, sitting in my own seat.
As the car rolls out of the car park, Jamie opens the CD cabinet and picks out the Great Divide album. I find myself blushing as she puts it in.
" You can't play that!" I cry, trying to stop her.
She rolls her eyes. " Oh, c'mon. I've heard it, like, a thousand times already."
" Yeah, but I haven't!" I protest, but she's already got it playing. The One's That I Love begins playing and I groan, before realising something. I smirk. " Wait, a thousand times."
Jamie laughs and slaps my arm gently. " Bit full of yourself, are you not?"
" If you say so," I chuckle, winking at her.
Before long, Jamie is nodding her head in time with Hold On.
" Hooolllldddddd on, you need to hoooollldddd onnn!" she sings loudly, closing her eyes as she does. She sings the way I do, her accent shining through. " Come on, Sam! Sing!"
I laugh and begin to sing, too. We make a good duet, though Jamie isn't the best singer I have to admit.
By the time Ocean's is over, we have pulled up outside Jamie's house. I stop the music abruptly and she pouts. I laugh.
" Jamie, I've had such a good time today," I tell her, smiling.
" I had a great time, too!" she exclaims, grinning at me and trying to hand me back my sunglasses.
I shake my head, pushing her hand away. " If I let you keep my glasses, will you promise we can do this again sometime?"
Jamie nods her head, giggling.
" McTrusty, you've got yourself a deal there."
