CHAPTER NINE

The drive home to Jamie's is silent. My cheeks burn from embarrassment, but not as much as my heart burns from sadness.

We pull up outside of Jamie's house and I park the car.

" I'll walk you to the door," I say quietly.

" You don't have to." she whispers.

I don't say anything, just follow her out the car and up to her door. When we reach it, she turns to me.

" Is this it then?" she asks, her eyes glistening.

" Is this what?" I ask.

" The last time I see you," she confirms, staring at me intently.

I don't say anything.

A tear slides down her cheeks as she turns to walk inside, opening the door wide.

Whatever possesses me, I try to fight it, I really do. But it's too strong. I grab her hand and swing her back round to me, staring at her.

My lips move in close to hers for the second time that night, but I don't kiss her. Instead, I whisper, " Why won't you let me kiss you?"

She swallows uncomfortably, looking first at my eyes and then at my lips. Her breath tickles my skin as she mutters, " I'm afraid."

" Afraid of falling in love?" I ask quietly.

She shakes her head ever so slightly. " No. Falling in love isn't my fear. Love is pretty constant. My fear is the people I fall in love with; people aren't constant. They change all the time."

I blink slowly, her beautiful scent intoxicating me.

" I'm different."

I take a chance. Very slowly - very shakily - I lean in and grace her lips with mine. And this time, she doesn't move away. Sparks fly through my body as our lips connect entirely.

Physically, I don't think we could be any closer. But mentally, I can never get close enough.

As we pull away, she takes a shaky breath. " You're different."

I smile, laughing in disbelief, and put a hand on each of her cheeks, pulling her back in for another kiss.

When we come up for breath, she smiles shyly at me.

" See you later, McTrusty," she whispers, running inside her house and closing the door behind her.

Smiling, I reach up and touch my lips, where hers had been just a minute ago.

As I walk away, I fist pump the air happily, sauntering towards my car.

" I saw that!" A voice rings out through the night. I turn around and see Jamie hanging out one of her open windows, giggling. She blows me a kiss before closing the window and rushing off to her bedroom.

I climb into my car and drive home, smiling all the way.
