chapter eighteen

" I don't want us to still be travelling on your birthday," I say firmly, raising a brow at Jamie.

She crosses her hands over her chest. " Sam, the tour is going so well. You can't just postpone the dates."

" I can and I will."

" Sam, if you do that you'll be disappointing thousands upon thousands of people. Or we could just keep travelling and disappoint no one."

" I'll be disappointing you."

" No, you won't be! Honestly! I mean, where will we be on my birthday?" she asks sternly.

" America, I guess," I shrug. " Somewhere in America."

She reaches out and grabs both my hands. " Well, then that's awesome! Seriously! I'll get to spend my twenty sixth in America!"

I smile slightly. " We could have your party after a gig."

" That's more like it!" she exclaims, dropping my hands and turning back to the W.H Smiths which resides in the airport. " Do you want anything?"

I shake my head. " No. We'll be boarding soon, there's not much point."

She nods in agreement and begins to walk towards where Ross, Barry and Craig are seated. She throws herself into a chair next to Ross.

" How's Joanne?" she asks, smiling.

Ross grins. " She's great."

" Guys," Craig says suddenly. " You know how I mentioned proposing to Kirsty?" I nod. " Well, I'm going to do it when we arrive back home, at the end of the month. Probably at the train station."

The small area is filled with gasps and congratulations and smiles as he says this. I smile across at him as he makes eye contact with me and he nods and smiles back.

" Flight 125 to New Plymouth is now boarding."

The five of us jump to our feet and begin to leisurely stroll towards our flight.

Thirty five minutes later we are in the air. I hate flying. It makes me terribly nervous and sick.

I grip onto the sides of the chair as a wave of panic washes over to me. I feel all the colour drain from my face.

" Sam?" Jamie asks from beside me. " Sam? You okay?"

" Yeah," I say weakly, trying to stop myself from slipping into unconsciousness.

" You sure, buddy?" I hear Ross's voice from the other side of me. " You've gone awful pale."

" I'm okay." I say. " I just need some water."

I hear Ross ask a flight attendant for some water but it's far away. Like an echo. I feel Jamie clutching my hand nervously.

" Ross, is he okay?" she asks.

" Yeah, don't worry; this happens all the time."

A moment later, I feel a plastic cup touch my lips and a dribble of water passes them. I open my mouth a little wider and take the cup from Ross, gulping down all the water in one go.

As soon as I'm done, I feel a hundred times better.

" Better?" Craig asks, leaning over to look at me.

I nod and smile slightly. " Much."

Jamie doesn't loosen her grip on my hand for the entire flight, which is an entire twenty four hours long. We eat with our hands linked, sleep with our hands linked, and read with our hands linked. Barry watches a rather long and loud action film which rouses us countless times during the long flight, and a couple times I have to tell him to put the sound down.

When we finally arrive, the five of us all let out a sigh of relief. We get off the plane as quick as possible so as to get fresh air.

After collecting our luggage, we hail a cab and make our way to our hotel.

The hotel is nice but it's too hot. As soon as we enter, I feel sweat begin to trickle down my forehead. After living in Scotland all my life, believe me, this is a big jump!

" Oh My, God! It's soooooo warm!" Barry exclaims, collapsing onto one of the sofas.

I roll my eyes in embarrassment at him. " I'll go get our room key, shall I?"

" That'd be great, bud, thanks," Barry says sarcastically, sticking his thumb up at me.

I collect our room key from the woman at the desk. We'll all be sharing a room, with three beds - one for me and Jamie, one for two of the guys, and one for the other - and two bathrooms - one bathroom for the guys and one for Jamie.

" Okay, let's go guys," I say, ushering my three friends and my girlfriend out of the lobby and towards the stairs.

It must take us twenty minutes to climb the stairs because it's just so unbearably warm. We are sticky with sweat by the time we reach our room, on the fifth floor.

" Guys, we could've just took the elevator," Jamie groans, lugging one of her bags along while I carry the rest.

" Ross hates them," Craig explains, but sounds just as bummed out about it.

Ross chuckles, grinning. " You're all very welcome!"

***

Once inside our hotel room, we place our bags in the far corner and collapse into our beds. It seems Barry and Ross will be sharing a bed and Craig will have his own.

Soon, I drift into a deep slumber, with Jamie holding tight only my hand.
