CHAPTER EIGHT
The next morning, I wake up with a busy mind. The first thought that touches my mind, is Jamie.
Is she safe? Has she passed out again? What if she's dead? What if it's my fault? I shouldn't have left her last night.
But I force myself to calm down and quickly realise that she will be fine. She just had a panic attack, that's all.
Still, though, I immediately roll out of bed and pull on tracksuit bottoms and an Oasis shirt, before bounding out the apartment, even if it is only seven am.
Before last night, it wasn't so evident to me. But now. . . now all it's all I can think about.
I like her.
Like, I like - like her.
The drive to her house is painfully slow, thought truthfully I probably get there faster than normal, what with the lack of traffic. When I park in her driveway, I literally race to the door and ring it five times.
She answers after a few minutes. Her hair - in it's natural, wavy form - is tossed over one shoulder, and I don't think she has on any makeup. She is wearing a tight fitting, long sleeved, v-neck black t-shirt and a pair of short, grey lounge shorts.
I feel my cheeks redden at the sight of her long, bare legs. She must see this and giggles.
Clearing my throat, I force myself to look her in the eye. " Um, I, um. . . came here to make sure you were okay."
She nods, smiling sweetly. " I'm fine." She pulls me into a tight hug, her cast pressing into my back. " Come in."
I walk into her small house and look around. She grabs my hand and leads me into the living room.
" Take a seat," she says, grinning. I nod and sit on her cream coloured couch, sinking into the comfortable fabric. " Tea?"
" Yes please."
While Jamie rushes off to make the tea, I look around the room. The walls are painted an off white colour, and one wall is decorated with gradient brown dots. Her TV is hanging on the wall above a cabinet with an X Box on, and some controllers. There is a brown blanket to the left of me, one she was presumably using, and a fireplace in the far corner. Her open laptop is laying beside me, and I can tell she has been scrolling through Tumblr.
Jamie enters the room a moment later, handing me my tea. I smile, excepting it, and she sits beside me, crossing her legs under her.
" So, no more panic attacks?"
She laughs, shaking her head. " Nope. No more panic attacks."
I nod, grinning. " Do you want to do something today?"
She nods her head excitedly, taking a sip of her tea. " Yeah! But I'll need some time to get ready."
" Well," I say, " how about I pick you up at six tonight and we go out into the woods again?"
" Yes, yes, yes!" she says enthusiastically.
I laugh at her enthusiasm, deciding that she looks cute when she's gets excited, with those little dimples under her eyes appearing.
After finishing my tea, we part ways, and I drive home in silence. When I get home, I shower since I haven't had one today, and change into a white, short sleeved t-shirt, some black skinny jeans, a khaki shirt, and black Dr. Martins, before making Barry, Craig and I something to eat.
" Guys," Craig says nervously over dinner. " I wanted to broach the subject with you two and Ross first before acting on it." Barry and I nod. " Em, I'm thinking about proposing to Kirsty. . ."
I grin, excited for my mate. " Craig, that's brilliant!"
" Aye, mate! It really is!" Barry exclaims.
Craig smiles. " So you two think it's a good idea?"
" Of course!" I say, nodding.
When I pick Jamie up at spot on six, she jumps into the car. She is wearing a black, loose fitting dress that comes to her knees and a black leather jacket, with black converse. Her hair is in a lose side pleat and I can't tell whether she's wearing makeup or not.
She looks hot.
" Wow. . . you look. . . wow," I stutter.
Jamie laughs, her cheeks reddening. " And you look very handsome, McTrusty."
I laugh and begin driving into town. I park outside a local H&M's and we walk the rest of the way to the woods.
The sky is dark, the only thing lighting it up being the moon and the stars, by the time we reach the tree. Like last time, I climb it first, and pull Jamie up by her working arm.
She situates herself beside me and let's her head fall onto my shoulder. And I can feel her body relax beside me.
" Did you ever think you would be where you are now?" she asks quietly.
I press a sloppy kiss to her hair. " No. Of course I didn't," I whisper. " When I was young, all I ever wanted to do was sing. I wanted to be like John Lennon or someone else like that. But no, I never thought I could actually do it. Never thought I could actually have everything I have today."
Jamie tilts her head up to look me straight in the eye. " You can have whatever you want."
The heat of the moment makes me do it. My thoughts and wishes control my body and I place two fingers under her chin and tilt her head up, moving my lips close to hers.
Just when I think we might kiss, she moves her head away, leaning it against my shoulder again.
" Everything apart from that, then," I mumble, moving myself away from her.
She gazes over her shoulder at me as I jump out of the tree, landing on my feet. " Let's go then," I say quietly, looking her in the eye.
She nods sadly and follows me down from the tree.
I can't believe the girl I've been pining over just knocked me back.
