Chapter 5: Follow me

Thomas' POV

I stare at Newt, not knowing what to say and not sure how to feel. Angry because he won't tell me about the Runners, yet happy because when I'm with him, I feel safe, like I already know him. He makes me forget all the horrible things that happened to me in the past 24 hours.

I find myself still staring and laugh at myself. "What is it," Newt asks. "Nothing," I say, "It's just..." I stop mid-sentence, because I realise that what I was about to say would probably mess everything up. "Yeah, go on?" Newt continues. "Never mind." I answer, blushing.

Newt looks at me, confused. He turns around and quickly continues with the planned meeting with the Keepers. He introduces me to every Keeper, but nothing seems to be sticking in my head, and I don't feel like picking a job. The Runners won't get out of my mind. When we make our way back to the Homestead, the sun is already starting to set. We are almost there when a small group of boys sprint back into the Glade, through the gigantic doors. The Runners. Where have they been all day? "Hey Newt," I say, "if every job in here has a Keeper, then the Runners do too. You should introduce me to him." Newt looks at me like he has been kicked in the face. "Tommy, I can't! Alby will kill me. You have to understand, being a Runner is dangerous and..." He can't finish his sentence, because the noise of the doors closing for the night interrupts him, and I watch as the doors slowly shut.

When the noise is over, I turn back to face Newt and say: "I just don't get it! What is out there that makes being a Runner so dangerous?" and in response, he grabs my hand and pulls me with him. "Follow me." he says. "Guess I don't have a choice." I answer.
