"You have to help me." Andre begged me. It was now quarter to one. Way past my curfew. For Andre, things weren't going so well. Ashley wanted no part of him. She didn't want to talk to him, look at him, or even be in the same room as him. She stayed away from him the minute she got home.
"What exactly did you do?" I asked him. I really wasn't sure what happened. I only what happened a while ago, when I was there with Petey.
We were sitting on the steps, my head resting against his shoulder. I had my arm linked with him. "See those two stars? The brightest ones?" Petey said, pointing the sky filled with stars. "The one on the right is Jackie, and the one on the left is Spencer." I formed a smile on my lips.
Why, Petey? Why? Why must you act so cute at times? Curse you! You know you love it. I do not. Plus, I think Austin may ask me to be his girlfriend. So? Doesn't mean it's going to change your feelings for Petey. Feelings? What feelings? You know, the ones that make your stomach turn when he walks up to you. Or when you see him in the hallways, you can't help but smile. Okay, this is ridiculous.
"Come on. It was joke! I'm sorry." Andre said, getting out of his car, following behind Ashley, who was storming off. I didn't even see the headlights of the car, let alone the car being parked in the driveway. I picked my head up from off Petey's shoulder, unlinked arms, and went to see what's wrong. Ashley's face had anger written all over it.
"What's wrong?" I asked Ashley, stopping her as she was stomping away.
"What's wrong? This guy," she pointed to Andre, "is wrong. To think I actually tutored him, and helped him with his assignments." She left and sat beside Petey.
I took a deep breath in and out. I walked over to Andre glared at him.
"What! It was a joke!" He shouted, defending himself.
"You lousy kids. Do you ever shut up?" One of the neighbors shouted out their window. Wow. To think I only thought that happened in movies and television shows.
Andre went over to the door. Ashley was sitting beside Petey. She linked arms with him. I didn't like it. I didn't like it one bit. It's not that I like Petey, that will never happen, I know what she's going to do. She's going to play with his feelings. To make Andre jealous, or to get rid of her anger. Which? I don't know. But I know that someone is going to get hurt. And I didn't want Ashley to play with Petey's heart the way... Petey is playing with mine. You know, maybe Ashley should play with Petey's heart. He'll get a taste of his own medicine.
"Okay, fine." I said to Andre. "But tell what happened." I demanded.
"Remember that joke I made? Woah there tiger, first kiss." Andre said, sitting down on my bed. "Well, she took it to heart, I guess. In the car, she started off yelling at me. Then, she gave me the silent treatment, to defend myself, she yelled again, then hated me." Andre explained to me.
I understood the situation he was in. When Ashley was mad, it may take days to get her to not hate you again. But that doesn't mean you're friends again. I think it's fair to say, Ashley isn't someone you can easily understand. It would probably take months to get her.
"Okay," I said to Andre, "get over her."
"Over her? I want to fix things, not fuck them up." Andre shouted. Did he not know it was late at night and people were sleeping?
"Look," I said, sitting down on my bed, gesturing for him to also do the same. "I'm pretty sure here plan is to make you jealous. So you have to do the same." I explained to him, as if it was written on a brochure.
"Why does she want to make me jealous?" Andre asked, getting up.
"I don't know. You hurt her, she'll hurt you. Common sense. How many girls have you dated? Every girl ends up doing this."
"Don't worry about that. We start tomorrow. Good night." Andre said, then left to his room.
I peeked out the door. In the room across I saw Petey sitting on his bed. Beside him sat Ashley. She was holding his hand, while he said something. Then, she hugged him. I had the urge to walk over and stop it, but no. I won't do that. Why do I care what they do? And I have a way to prove it.
I walked over to the mirror where I put my phone to charge. I took it out of the outlet and dialed his number.
"Hello. I know it's late, but want to have lunch tomorrow? I know, I just mean, just because we're a thing, it doesn't mean you can't make other plans, right? Okay then, I'll see you tomorrow at ..." I wasn't sure where to meet him. "Yeah sure. Burger King is good. Okay see you tomorrow. Yeah, um ... love you too."
The 'love you' kind of scared me. I'm not sure if it was too soon. But he said it first, so I guess he made the decision. But this will prove that I don't care about what happens there. I don't care.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I could hear a very loud noise coming from Andre's room. I'm not talking about the music he was listening to. I could hear things falling, and cabinets being slammed shut. I wanted to go see what was wrong, but I had to get ready for my date. I put on my ring, grabbed my purse and headed out my door. I looked to my left, and Andre was standing there. He wore a black jacket over his white top and blue jeans.
"Going out I see." I said to him, raising an eyebrow. "You look good."
"Thank you. As do you." He said. Manners. I like.
"Got a date?"
He nodded. "What about you?" He asked me.
"Yeah." I told him, walking towards the stairs. "We're having lunch, at Burger King."
"Did you spy on me, or is this just a coincidence?"
I was confused. I didn't understand.
"My date, is meeting me at Burger King."
I smiled. I don't know if it was Andre doing what I said, or Andre going on a date, without being annoying.
"Come on. We'll go together." Andre said. I sat down in the passenger seat and buckled my seat belt. I didn't want Andre to ask me about my date. But I did want Andre to know. The bet. I wanted him to know because of the bet or the deal, or the suggestion, or what ever you call it. I wanted Andre to know, so they'd call it off. So I wouldn't have to be used.
Andre didn't ask my about my date. I was surprised. Instead, he told me about his.
"She's in band, she plays drums, she's on the girls soccer team, she's smart, so you may like her, she loves dancing, and she's in the drama club." Andre told me.
"Is this your first date with her?" I asked him.
"Yeah."
"Then how do you know so much about her already?"
"I... I checked her... Facebook." Andre said, blushing, while parking the car.
When we got inside, the place was crowded. I said good-bye to Andre and went to go find him.
"Bethany!" I turned around. I saw him.
"Austin." I said, and went over and hugged him.
Austin has been on vacation, somewhere. But he was back. Finally. Before leaving, he told me he'd miss his 'girlfriend'. I was very confused by what he meant. But then hit me, I was his girlfriend.
"Come on, lets go get that last table." Austin said.
We walked over to the table, and at the same time, Andre showed up with his date.
"Oh god." Andre's date said. She was beautiful for someone who was so busy. I expected geeky glasses, suspenders, you know, the stuff they show on tv.
"Hey, if you guys want, we can... double date?" Austin suggested.
Double date. This should be fun.
