chapter seven ~ children shouldn't play with dead things

on the road

"Come on, Sam. I'm begging you, this is stupid." The impala roared on the road as they went around a curve, the road illuminated by the bright sun.

"Why?" Sam asked Dean.

Dean had his window down and his elbow sticking out, "Going to visit Mom's grave? She doesn't even have a grave, there was no body left after the fire."

"She has a headstone," Sam offered.

"Yeah, put up by her uncle, a man we've never even met. So you want to go pay your respects to a slab of granite put up by a stranger? Come on," Dean argued.

"Dean, that's not the point," Sam said.

Dean shook his head, "Well, then enlighten me, Sam."

"It's not about a body or a casket. It's about her memory, ok? And after Dad, it just feels like the right thing to do," Sam explained.

"It's irrational, that's what it is," Dean grumbled.

Sam shrugged, "Look, man, no one asked you to come."

Dean tried to switch topics, "Why don't we swing by the roadhouse instead? We haven't heard anything on the demon lately, we should be hunting that son of a bitch down."

"That's a good idea," Sam nodded. "You should go and take Haven with you. Just drop me off, I'll hitch a ride and meet you two there tomorrow."

"Right," Dean snorted. "Stuck with those people, making awkward small talk while Ash tries to hit on Haven until you show up. No thanks."

Sam had wandered to find Mary's headstone while Dean stayed behind. The oldest Winchester leaned against the impala from the outside as Haven slept in the backseat. Dean noticed she hadn't been sleeping much after the encounter with Gordon, so he didn't want to disturb her peace.

It didn't last long when Haven started to mumble incoherently, tossing and turning in the back seat. "No, no no no," She said over and over, alerting Dean. He swiftly opened the back door and slid into the backseat, lifting her head into his lap.

"Hey, Haven, wake up. It's just a nightmare," He told the girl. She gasped awake and scrambled out of Dean's lap. "You ok?"

"Fine, it was just a dream," Haven told him.
