We had all gathered for the arrival of the royal family. It had been a hectic month. Everyone was trying to make the north look perfect for their arrival. Our best rooms were kitted out and our stables were cleaned and cleared for royal horses. I was put in the second row, right behind Robb but next to Jon. I still hadn't told him about Ned's offer. I was going to do it. I just didn't know how to break the news to him. He would be crushed. I couldn't wait to see my father, I had never really met him, last time I saw him was when I was four.
The king's party pours through the gates of Winterfell in a river of gold, silver and steel, one hundred strong.Over their heads, a dozen golden banners whip in the wind, emblazoned with the crowned stag of the House Baratheon. I stood up straight. I had to look good. The first to enter are the Kings guard. They all had their helmets on. But as soon as they stopped, one of them took their helmets off. And he was drop dead gorgeous. Kingslayer they call him, Twin brother to the Queen. Jamie Lannister. I'm pretty sure I was caught staring by many people, as Jon had gripped my hand roughly and Jamie Lannister himself had given me a quick wink, I was flustered and looked away when I saw Jon's enraged face. God I wish I told him about kings landing before now, he's going to think I left because of him.
When the kings carriage arrived, we all rushed to bow. I couldn't care less about the king, Ned should have the crown, he wouldn't have it without Uncle Ned. The king Approached Ned and beckons him to rise.
"You've gotten fat." The king says giving a stern face. Ned tries to maintain his stony decorum, but it's hopeless. For the first time, we see him laugh -- and it becomes clear that Ned and the King are actually old friends. King Robert joins in, engulfing him in a bone-crunching hug. He finally releases Ned, who takes a moment to catch his breath. I have to stop myself from laughing too.
"Nine years! Why haven't I seen you?Where the hell have you been?" The king says patting him on the back.
"Guarding the north for you, your Grace. Winterfell is yours." Ned says and they king laughs.
The king goes over to Aunt Catelyn and gives her a huge hug.
"Cat!" He says before going over to Robb.
"You've gotten big! What a warrior you'll be!" He says shaking his hand.
"Your a pretty one." He says to Sansa and she smiles.
"I've never met this one before, she's a pretty little thing." He says stopping at Arya.
"Come on lad show me your muscles!" He says to bran and Rickon, who flexes their bony arms, causing a laugh from the king.
"Oh I remember this one! Jon Arryn's Daughter!" He says to me, I hoped he wouldn't see me from my place in the second row.
"Your grace." I say curtsying.
"Your father was a great man." The king says patting me on the back.
"Was? Is he not here?" I say looking at the carriages.
"Ned you didn't tell her?" The king says looking at Uncle Ned, who looks guilty.
"Roslyn, your father died, he was sick, the milk of the poppy couldn't help him." Ned says and I try and keep my composure.
"Oh." I say quickly, blinking hard to stop the tears. The kings gathering was hard, I wanted to stay in my bedroom and cry but I couldn't. I shouldn't be this upset, I barely knew the man. But he was still my father. And he was still dead. Jon tried his best to comfort me, he even brought the pups up but it didn't work. I decided that I would be strong and go to the royal banquet, I would get drunk and do what I want. Have some fun. My maids kitted me out in a gorgeous green dress. I looked like royalty. I was about to chicken out and stay in my bedroom when I heard a knock at the door.
"It's the kingslayer miss." One of my maids whisper to me and I go over to the door.
"Sir Jamie, how many I help you?" I say smoothing out my dress.
"Lady Roslyn, I just wanted to offer my condolences about your father, I would have thought you would have known about it by now." He says and I smile.
"Thank you Sir Jamie, I barely knew the man, nothing really to be upset about." I say and he smiles.
"Would you like an escort to the Banquet?" Jamie says extending out a hand.
"I would love that." I say accepting the hand. The staff really outdone themselves with this celebration. It was gorgeous. Nobody expected to see me with the Kingslayer. It was a shock to everybody. I wasn't allowed to sit on the main table, but I was sat next to Sansa and her friends. She was making eyes at Prince Joffrey the whole time. Arya was really entertaining though. Jamie was different, I never expected him to come to my room with condolences, not even Catelyn had. It was nice of him. I was broken out of my thought by a hand on my shoulder.
"Would you like to accompany me outside lady Roslyn?" Jamie says as I turn around.
"I would love too." I say before grabbing my cup and going outside.
"It was too noisy in there." Jamie says taking a sip from my cup.
"My table was boring, all I heard was Sansa talking about the Prince, cute I guess." I say rolling my eyes, he chuckles.
"That's my Nephew your talking about." He says and I laugh.
"Nothing against him, everything against Sansa." I say and we're stopped by the sound of people talking.
"You don't miss much, do you? We could use a man like you on the Wall, someday." A voice I recognise as Ned's brother Benjamin.
"Take me with you when you go back. Father will let me go if you ask him. I know he will." Jon replies, it sounded passionate, like he really wants it
"The Wall is a hard place for a boy." Benjen replies and I hear a sigh from Jon.
"I turn seventeen on my next name day. Bastards grow up faster.I want to serve in the Night's Watch. I'm ready to swear your oath." Jon says, trying to convince him, all this time I was worried about leaving him, he was about to leave me.
"You don't understand what you'd be
giving up. We have no families. None of us will ever father sons." Benjen says, I quickly look at Jamie, who's just as invested in the conversation as me.
"I don't care about that!" Jon says and I decide I can't listen anymore.
"Come, let's go." I say to Jamie and he grins and holds his arm out.
We walk past the scene as Benjamin is leaving, Jon looks annoyed to see me and Jamie.
"Jon." I say nodding at him.
"Roslyn, Kingslayer." He says back, trying to hide his anger.
"The wall I hear? You would make a good man of the knights watch." Jamie says and Jon's face goes pale. "Excuse me." He says before running away."What a coward." I say rolling my eyes, Jamie looks intrigued.
"I see what's going on." Jamie says and I look at him.
"Go on." I reply.
"You and the Stark Bastard were together, planning to get married even. But you heard that. But it doesn't matter because you were travelling to kings landing with Ned Stark anyways. This made your confession to him much easier. And you also used me to make him jealous." Jamie says and I smile.
"Yes, your right." I say and he laughs.
"I'm not just a pretty face." He says as we go back inside, all cares gone.
