DARK RED

"Something bad is about to happen to me"

THE frosty wind caused the tall windows to shake violently. Rainclouds covered the sky and canceled Arabella's plans of going for a run, causing her a foul mood.

She removed her all-white mask and gloves and placed them back in her bag. Bianca Barclay had once again proven how strong her fencing skills were, and beaten her.

Arabella let out an obnoxiously loud sigh and collapsed on her bed. She had the dorm to herself as Layla decided to pull an all-nighter to catch up on her studies in the library.

The unfinished assignments resting on her desk called out her name, but her phone and headphones called out louder. She grabbed them off her shelf and clicked on her Harry Styles playlist. She jumped back off her bed as she heard familiar voices outside.

Arabella peered out her window to see Wednesday, the girl she met earlier, and the much older woman she bumped into. There was also a much younger boy there.

Arabella unhooked the latch on the window, and slowly pushed it open, hoping the creaking sound wouldn't give her eavesdropping away. She was just about high enough for them not to see her, but she could hear them clearly.

"Pugsley, you're soft and weak. You'll never survive without me. I give you two months, tops." Wednesday told him harshly as he pulled her in for a hug.

"I'm gonna miss you too" Pugsley replied.

The older woman then summoned the younger brother to wait in the car for her. Arabella decided this was her chance to get a better look at her. Their family only seemed to consist of Wednesday, the girl who was starting here, Pugsley, her younger brother, and the mother she bumped into earlier today. They were all wearing a shade of black, something you'd wear at a funeral.

Wednesday and her mother definitely shared facial features and expressions but had completely opposite eyes. While Wednesday had eyes filled with sorrow and woe, her mother had eyes filled with resilience and vulnerability. Arabella jumped back from the window as those same eyes of resilience and vulnerability met hers, staring up at her through the window.

Arabella panicked. Had she seen her through the black tint on the window? She backed up onto the desk behind her and sat down on the pairing chair. She slipped back on her headphones and unpaused her playlist.

Arabella racked her brain for something she could do to fill the time. She still needed a birthday present for Layla. She could still go to Jericho and pick up her present with a birthday cake. Enid had already discussed with Arabella that she wanted a surprise party for Layla, but she hadn't decided on the specifics.

Now would probably be the best time for it because Layla's still studying and Enid doesn't do homework on Friday afternoons.

Arabella slipped on her black converse and changed out of her pajama pants into grey sweatpants. She grabbed her phone on her way out of the dorm and locked the door behind her.

She figured either Enid or Wednesday could open the door for her. Arabella abruptly knocked on their door and was greeted by Enid. Behind her stood a furious Wednesday. They must've been arguing.

"So, how are you guys getting along?" Arabella spoke with a smile.
