Chapter 26

Leo

I don't know what is worse, listening to the splashing as the gators make their way to shore, snapping at each other on the way or hearing Lindsey chew out Fitz. I think it's the gators. Hearing these two go after each other serves them right for taking Hope.

"Just take it, Fitz! I'm not the maternal kind! And it smells!" Lindsey couldn't be more right about that. She's the furthest thing from a loving mother.

"I just changed her! She doesn't smell, it's the damn diaper! Now take her so I can throw this out!" The frustration and annoyance in his voice brings a satisfying smile to my face. I hope they continue to turn on each other and tear each other down.

"Just put it over there! I'm not taking it! I won't! Babysitting wasn't the deal!" Lindsey never has been very good with children.

Fitz has to realize that he has his hands full.

"As much as I'm enjoying the fact that Hope stunk Lindsey out, if we don't move, we're gonna be dinner for them." Ethan shines his flashlight out toward the water and I swear there's a hundred eyes reflecting back at us.

"Holy shit." Whispering the words, I wonder if they can hear my heart pounding. "How fast do you think they are?"

"I'm really not that curious to find out. We have to get inside." Ethan keeps his light trained on the water as he stands up, plastering his back against the cabin wall.

"Damn it, Fitz! You ball-less bastard!" Her screechy voice is enough to crack glass.

Ethan chuckles and mouths "ball-less bastard" to me. It makes me laugh too.

"You slept with her." Whispering the teasing jab, Ethan elbows me in the ribs. He's never living that down.

I know it's a sore spot between Ethan and Brynn. I know it's the reason they broke up. He's my brother and best friend, I was right there when everything fell apart for him. But I wouldn't be a very good little brother if I didn't get a well placed jab in occasionally.

And it breaks the tension over the danger we're in out here.

We knew what we were getting into coming this way. I didn't realize there were as many gators out here as there are. Not something I can change at the moment but I'll report them to the wildlife service and they can come out and remove some of them. They'll rehouse them at a few zoos and in a better preserve where no one can just walk into the feeding grounds. It's not safe for the gators or the people who come through here.

Knowing I'd rather have Ethan pissed than scared, I poke at him again."Did you ever get checked for that rash you had?"

"Fuck you!" The grumble only cracks me up more. "I'm gonna kick your ass when this is over."

"We'll see about that. Let's just get out of here with our balls intact. I don't think you want to be called a ball-less bastard anymore than Fitz does. We can't wait for Charlie much longer. We're running out of time. The gators are getting closer." Too close for my comfort.

"I'm not getting stuck with this kid again! I thought of everything! All you've done is bitch at me. I'm the brains, the beauty and the power in this partnership! I've held up my end of the deal. You got your lawyer, your drugs and your chance to get back at that whiny little whelp. I even got your screaming brat for you! When are you going to man up and get me that money?"

It figures that is what this is all about. She doesn't care about anyone else but herself. She is a gold digger, plain and simple. At least we know she isn't planning on keeping Hope because she wants a baby. Thank God she doesn't want that. It might actually be a relief for her when we get in there. I bet she willingly hands Hope to us.
