Chapter 20

Leo

This isn't working. I don't even know which direction Lindsey went. For all we know she's halfway to Mexico. And we can't find a trace to find them.

I left Perking Up two hours ago. After we found Brynn, I left her awake and hurting with Ethan and Blake while they waited for an EMT to get there. If I know my brother he's got her taken care of. He won't leave Brynn hurting again.

Despite what they say to each other and everyone else, I know what I know. Those two still love each other. Ethan won't let anything happen to her.

And I have a little girl to find.

We split up. Derrick went south out of town, heading toward the border, and I went north, toward the city. We have Cole searching around the houses on the edge of town. Charlie's put out a statewide Amber Alert and has his entire department searching for Quinn. Blake has gone back to the Inn to see if there's anything we missed.

All of us are doing something but it's not enough. None of it is enough. Quinn has to be frantic over this. And she now knows what happened this morning with the Inn and her car. A situation that was kept from her. And I was a part of that.

She won't like that. She'll put it aside while we search for Hope. She'll probably forgive us once this is over. But I doubt she'll be willing to trust me again. I kept an important piece of information from her knowing it would hurt her. She won't be that forgiving.

That problem is mine to carry.

Driving down the freeway, I'm looking at every car, every driver, and anything that could possibly lead me to answers. I've never seen so many damn red cars! I swear everyone decided to get a red car at the wrong moment.

The problem is I know Lindsey's car and I'm not seeing it. She isn't stupid, she has to know we're looking for her. So where would she go if she's in trouble? Her Dad.

But he was still at the courthouse. Not that he couldn't or wouldn't help her. He would do anything for Lindsey and that is part of the problem. He spoiled his daughter so much she doesn't believe she's ever wrong or will have consequences for her actions.

That makes Lindsey reckless and stupid. Neither of them see that their end of running this town is coming to an end. Georgia will deal with the mayor, I have no doubt about that. Lindsey is another story. She's a loose cannon and that's dangerous for Hope.

I feel like I'm chasing my shadow out here. I've been on the road longer than It took to find Brynn and I'm coming up empty. She has to be around here somewhere. If she headed toward the city, it would make sense for her to try to hide in the crowds and buildings where people don't know everyone they see on the street.

It's the logical place to hide. There's so many faces, so many strangers in and out of every building. Lindsey would feel safe to walk the street with Hope and no one would know that she kidnapped her. And Hope is too young to help herself.

Once again my phone goes off and I glance down at it. Someone has been texting the group since the moment I left the coffee shop. Giving updates on any progress that's made, letting others know of places searched and ruled out. The longer this takes the less likely we are to find them.

That isn't a comforting thought.

I see Quinn's face on my screen and ignore the call. I should have known something like this would happen. Lindsey is jealous and bitter. She doesn't handle rejection well on a sane day. And Lindsey hasn't been sane in the last year. She's progressively gotten worse.
