Chapter 25
Quinn
"I should be out there searching for Hope. I'm her mother. Sitting here, by the phone, waiting for someone to call and tell me she's safe and that she's coming home isn't helping." I'm tired of waiting. I just want my baby back. Not doing anything is driving me nuts.
"Okay, would you like me to warn the boys that you're heading out, alone, unarmed and worried out of your mind? I'm sure they'll be happy to drop everything they're doing to find you too." Georgia is just too agreeable. And she's right, damn it.
That's just annoying.
"No!" Pouting, I walk to the front window and stare out at the dark street.
It's late. Really late. Emma has gone to bed. She was exhausted and needed to get home to get Hunter to bed. Jim said he was happy to stay with her, but Emma insisted on going to her. She is a good mom.
I don't feel like I've been a very good one lately. I should have known that Fitz would try to take Hope from me. He doesn't love her, he doesn't even know her but it's a means to an end. I have what he wants, my inheritance from Georgia. If I give him that, if I let him take all my money, maybe he'll give me my baby back and leave me in peace.
"Stop it!"
Turning around Aubrey is standing next to me ready to scold me from the expression on her face. "I wasn't doing anything."
"Yes, you were." Looking over her shoulder, she glances at Brynn and Georgia sitting on the couch. "If you give in, if you give him what he wants do you really think it's going to stop there?"
Thinking hard about that question, I frown and look back out at the night. "He already said I have what he wants. I got what he should have gotten from football but because of me his career was ruined."
"You didn't ruin his career! Seriously?! Did you get out there on the football field and ram into him hard enough he needs surgery? Did you give him the drugs he got hooked on? Good God! Stop taking responsibility for something that you aren't responsible for!" Aubrey's question is loud enough that Brynn and Georgia stop their conversation and listen to us. "If you give him money, what do you think is going to happen?"
Not sure about my response, I hesitate to answer. "I hope he gives me my baby back."
"Nope! He's got Lindsey whispering in his ear now. I've known her all my life. Believe me when I say that she isn't going to let Fitz end it there. She wants a lot more than what you have. Lindsey won't stop until you have nothing left. All of you." Aubrey looks at Georgia and gets a silent nod.
"Aubrey is right. Lindsey is a gold digging bitch. She doesn't care about Hope but she will use her to get her up the ladder." Brynn agrees with Aubrey.
"Sugar, do you trust Fitz? After everything that has happened, do you truly believe he will just walk away from all this if you turn over all that money?" Shaking her head at me, I realize just how naive I am.
"What am I supposed to do then? I don't care about the money! I just want my baby!" I feel like I'm falling apart.
"I know you don't. It's never been about the money for you." Georgia got up and came to us. Wrapping her arms around me, I felt that strong confidence, that courage only Georgia has that helps strengthen my own will. "That's why I was so willing to give it to you. Lindsey isn't like you, she isn't like me. She won't let Fitz go until she is on top of the pecking order."
"What am I supposed to do?" I am out of my realm here.
"You wait with the rest of us. And you trust Leo to find Hope and bring her home." I wish it was that simple. I just don't think it's going to be that simple.
