BEGIN AGAIN

Chapter Six

The first two months in Seoul went on in a blink. I didn't get enough time to relax because of handling both work and home. And recently Suyeong has been demanding more time from me.

I don't know what is going on with her. I've talked to her teacher and nothing significant came out of it. She's doing good at academics and she's made some friends she interacts with regularly. I even thought of talking to Suyeong about it. But I don't know how to ask her and not make her feel like it's putting pressure on me to manage the time.

But still I think I will talk to her about it.

I've had my suspicions about why she would feel she needs more time from me. In Ilsan she could spend time with Suyeon. So even though I couldn't make enough time for her she could be distracted. But here in Seoul, she feels my absence more.

Even then I have no solution about it.

There's a big case today and I'm assisting Attorney Jung. So I sent Suyeong to school and rushed to the Supreme court to meet Miss Hong in the Supreme court premises.

The security zone in front of the supreme court had some military barricading the main entrance with guns.

Normally it's not this much security, so I was a bit confused at first. I asked Miss Hong about it.

"Why is there so many military here today?"

She looks at me mysteriously. Then just answers nonchalantly.

"There's a chain murder hearing today. The perpetrator is a big shot. Hence the security."

They give criminals security? Wouldn't it be better if they're attacked anyway? I thought in my head. Though I didn't have the courage to voice it in front of Miss Hong. And make a fool of myself as a lawyer. But it's my honest opinion in general.

What I didn't realise then is how big of a shock is awaiting me just in the afternoon.

After attorney Jung reached the court we all entered the court building to go to hearing room 7.

As this was a big case I didn't dare expect it to be solved just yet. Given the fact that I knew some exhibits of ours were even just to give an eyewash and withhold the hearing for a few more dates.

It's one of the techniques I heard Miss Hong explain to the new employees including me.

Whenever a case goes tricky Miss Hong always use this diversion technique to buy some time and find solid proof.

The case went quite well for my expectation.

And when we got finished with the hearing for today we made our way outside. On the way we met Miss Hong's Italian boyfriend who looks way too much like a Korean person. He took Miss Hong away with him. As we split ways I followed attorney Jung listening to his pointless rants.

As we got nearer to the gate of the court building a sound of commotion reached us.

"What is happening?"

I asked no one in particular, as a young woman, standing at the side answered me.

"The victims' family are rioting outside. Shin Dogeon is here."

She took a puff from a flower I didn't notice she had in her hand as she continues.

"I don't understand why do they have to give security to a criminal!"

I think she said more to herself than to me. As she continued grunting and made her way to a particular direction continuing sniffing on the flower in her hand.

In the commotion attorney Jung has been taken away by a security leaving only me standing at the side.

And that is exactly when I remembered.

"Suyeong!"

I started panicking. Knowing that the trial would take time I requested one of Suyeong's friend's mother to pick her up and drop her off to me at the Supreme court. But right now I couldn't find her.

There was a crowd formed in front of the security zone and some were trying to break their way in.

"Appa!"

I heard her before I could see her. From the side of the the entrance opening my precious star was running towards me.

"Suyeong ah!"

I smiled at her. Seeing the silhouette of her friend and the friend's mother I was assured of her safety. But that lasted only for a second.

Because right then I saw the crowd scatter screaming and shouting running for dear life as a bus made its way recklessly towards the supreme court and straight towards the car that was taking Shin Dogeon away.

In the pandemonium I saw my Suyeong fall on her knees.

No!

I couldn't think anymore. All I saw was the bus coming speedily without a stop and my daughter was right on the way.

Everyone panicked. But no one did anything. As I ran towards my daughter. The only anchor that was keeping me going until now. The only human being I can call mine in this world. The only one who loves me unconditionally.

I can't lose her!

I ran and shielded her as I knew I couldn't run away in time carrying a six years old. I could roll away but in the nick of time my brain gave out. I feared maybe this is the end.

But on that exact moment I saw from the corner of my eyes, someone come out empty handed from the supreme court building, snatched a machine gun from a military man and stood aiming at the bus driver.

As if he wasn't hesitant to shoot if the bus doesn't stop. And he proved he wasn't when he really did shoot startling the whole crowd and my trembling daughter cocooned inside my embrace.

A frown formed on my forehead as I felt a swish of air right behind me. The bus was upturned and screeched on the concrete. And at that moment I saw no emotion on that face.

Kang Yohan.

Standing in front of the supreme court with a light machine gun in hand.

He looked like a devil. He looked like he didn't fear the consequences. He didn't care about anything.

And then he looked at me.

Our eyes met and a wave of electric passed through my body as it slowly downed on me that I returned from the gate of certain death.

A single tear escaped my eyes.
