"So, Kingston, when was the last time you saw your father?" I asked, pushing my dinner aside. The only reason I arranged the dinner in the first place was for the formalities.
Kingston shared a look with Cara before he cleared his throat. "If you mean my biological father, I haven't seen him since he was arrested."
Cara's head snapped to the side, her gaze filled with confusion at her boyfriend's admission. So, she didn't know about his relationship with his father.
My eyes narrowed even further. I knew I was right not to trust him. For all we knew, Eduardo could be using him to keep tabs on Cara while he was in prison. He didn't even attend her new school, but all of a sudden, he showed up there, and now he was dating Cara.
"That means you were in contact with your father in the past. You two are close to each other, right? You knew what he was going to do with Cara," I accused.
"My interactions with Eduardo have all been against my will, and while I do know the fate all his wives suffer, I do not agree with him. My mother was once his victim."
Sympathy filled Cara's eyes, and she closed her hand over his on the table, squeezing gently. He turned to look down at her with a smile, and something in his gaze softened.
Hm. Maybe I was too hard on him. He couldn't possibly support a man who harmed his mother in the past. Only a psychopath would. I didn't put it past Eduardo to hang something over his son's head just to get him to do his bindings. The Famiglia was all about beating sons to continue their empires, after all.
I reached for my glass of water, taking a sip from the cup before I spoke again. "Nicholas said you weren't raised in the Cosa Nostra. May I ask why?"
"My mother was fortunate to escape."
I nodded in agreement because she really was. Heavens knew what he did to his other wives before Nicholas put him behind bars. "Thank God for that. She's now married to a millionaire lawyer, yes?"
Amusement flickered in his gaze. "Yes. Though Jackson will probably be offended if he heard you called him a millionaire. He just updated his net worth. He's officially a billionaire."
I cracked a smile at that. "You have a good relationship with him, I assume?"
Stepparents weren't always nice to their stepchildren, after all. Having Eduardo as a father was torture enough.
"Jackson spoils him too much, if you ask me. He drives a fancy sports car worth over three million dollars," Cara piped in, her tone filled with disbelief.
Kingston's lips curved up in a smile."Good thing she didn't ask you. Besides, that fancy car is the only reason your lazy ass gets anywhere on time."
"She still wakes up late?" I asked.
"No!" Cara said at the same time Kingston said yes. She threw her hands up in the air. "Sue me. Not everyone is a morning person."
"Excuses, excuses. That's all I hear. Just admit you're weak."
"I'd rather snip your balls off. How about that?" She shot back with a saccharine smile.
Kingston threw an arm around her shoulder, his eyes dancing with laughter. "Chill out with the sexual advances, hm? I'm trying to make a good impression here."
I chuckled. Had to give it to the guy. He was honest.
"How's school going for you two? Any tough teachers or kids?"
"School is great. Kingston does my homework sometimes. His friends think he's so whipped."
Kingston snorted, bringing his glass of apple juice to his lips. He didn't drink alcohol at all. Cara's words, not mine.
