Year 1997. Angel's Orphanage.
Little Zhan-Er, who was yet to be named as Xiao Zhan, was standing in front of a tall and wide wall. He was staring at some of the thousands of words written on it.
"Family everything?" He asked the nun beside him with his small voice that was a little higher in pitch.
The nun chuckled but it wasn't of ridicule or insult, but it was simply of fondness and adoration towards little Zhan-er's ignorance.
"It's not just what it means, Zhan-er. As you can see, 'Family' is above 'Everything' with this line in between them." She looked down at him to confirm. "Right?"
Zhan-er nodded.
"Then that's just it, Zhan-er." The nun smiled. "In any given situation, a family will have your back. They will always be there for you and support you. So you also have to do the same for them. This line here in between means that 'Family' must be over 'Everything', above everything and prioritized over everything else. Do you understand, Zhan-er?"
"So um, 'Family'..." Zhan-er's finger touched the cold cement wall, pointing right on the word. He traced the long line in between the two words before he continued, "Over..." Then he brought his finger down, sliding to the word below the line. "Everything..."
"Family Over Everything?" Xiao Zhan looked up, asking for confirmation.
"Yes, Zhan-er." The nun nodded as she smiled.
Xiao Zhan pursed his lips and brought his head down. He obviously didn't believe what he heard. Because if that was true, he wouldn't be in an orphanage. If that was true, he wouldn't have felt so alone and lonely in this world.
"But my family..." was all he could say.
The nun understood what he meant. She shook her head. "No, Zhan-er. Your family never left you. You just haven't met them yet."
"What do you mean, sister Jing?"
"Zhan-er." The nun crouched down and cupped the small face of the young Zhan-er. "You don't need the proof of blood to become a family."
"If they love you and care for you unconditionally, then that makes them your family. Don't think about the people who left you. Think about the people who are with you."
"Because those people who are always there for you, are your true family, Zhan-er."
Xiao Zhan looked at her in a daze.
This day had been engraved in his memory.
Because with what sister Jing had said, Xiao Zhan became hopeful. He wasn't hopeless after all!
He would meet his own family one day, someday! For sure! And when that happens, Xiao Zhan promised to himself that his family will be over everything!
Because that's what a family does!
"A-Zhan, I'm pregnant. We're gonna be a family." Xiao Zi smiled. When Xiao Rong learned what happened, it was things that were quickly taken care of and not Xiao Zhan and Xiao Zi. The stock price would plummet once this scandal circulated and with how atrocious it was, it would definitely not just travel around China, but it'd be worldwide for each nationality to gossip about.
Xiao Zhan, after undergoing a highly confidential surgery, was sent to a completely rural place wherein Xiao Zi was also already staying since she was sent there first.
It was a mansion with quite a number of maids and housekeepers so it was certain that they wouldn't live poorly and uncomfortably in their new 'home'. But Xiao Zhan knew this was a cage. So that his father could lock in the utter shame in his family.
