THE BEGINNING OF THE END

"WHY you gotta always talk shit about Merle? He's your brother too." Daryl asked Sadie. Daryl felt as if his sister agreed that the new guy in town did the right thing. Leaving Merle up there like that.

What Daryl didn't know was that she did agree. Merle was an asshole, even she knew that. Merle was why she left all those years ago in the first place. His abuse of power after their father died made her feel inferior. It didn't matter that Daryl put up with it, but she refused too. Despite this, Sadie couldn't stop caring for her older brother. He was family. He was blood.

She huffed as she turned around to look at her brother. "Just shut up for one goddamn second in your life."

Daryl sighed heavily and sat back against the moving truck. Sadie smirked and leaned her head against the passenger seat.

"You two, uh, always at each other's throats?" Rick asked her as he side eyed the woman sat beside him.

"Always."

"You're the youngest, I'm thinkin'? I always let me little brother get away with–"

Sadie turned to look at Rick. "What is this? Twenty questions?"

Rick moved his lips into a tight line, "No, I was just–"

"Just tryna play good cop, am I right?" Sadie asked him with a raised eyebrow. "What's with the getup anyway? Didn't you know the world ended months ago?"

"What is this, twenty questions?" He mimicked.

Sadie glared at the man.

"Not at all, officer." She spat.

Glenn then tried to relieve some of the tension and asked, "Say, Sadie, will you teach me a thing or two on throwing knives?"

"If Sadie could remember how, I'm sure she could teach you." Daryl smirked.

"Next knife I throw is going through your skull, Daryl." She then looked to Glenn, "I'd be happy too. But next time, ask because you want to learn, not because it's so fucking awkward in this truck."

Glenn shrunk back while Rick side-eyed Sadie.

"What?" She asked. "I'm just saying it like it is. It's awkward."

Rick didn't say anything. In the hour he'd known her, he could tell she was interesting. She spoke first, rather than thought about what she saying. Not only that, but she owned it.

"So," Sadie began, "While we're playing the game, is Lori your sister or somethin'?"

"Huh?" Rick asked, taken aback by the question. "Uh, no. She's my wife."

Sadie's eyes suddenly went wide and she began to laugh.

"Sadie, zip it." Daryl warned.

Sadie quickly stopped and sighed. "Sorry, officer. That's not funny. I just didn't know she was married. I mean, all of us knew she probably was at some point because of Carl, ya know? Unless ya'll weren't married, then no shame at all officer–"
