Storyline:

Childhood
Johanna was born in Germany to a psychologist and a nurse. From a young age, Johanna knew she wanted to be a doctor. When Johanna was 9, her family moved to Austria to be closer to their family. At her new school, Johanna struggled to make friends. She was picked on for her accent and the fact she had made friends with the weird kid, Otto Bottenfield. The two lonely kids quickly became close friends and were inseparable. Otto was also bullied for his height and the fact he was a momma's boy but Johanna always stood up for him and even got into fistfights for him. The two did everything together, bonding over their love of the arts, being in the art, photography and band clubs together and essentially living in each other's homes. They were so close, that they started being teased about dating starting in middle school. Once in high school, they acted like every other couple in the school, except they weren't together, even going to senior prom together. Otto actually started developing feelings for Johanna but never confessed for fear of ruining their friendship. The two realized their careers would separate them, Otto leaving for the military at 17 and Johanna staying behind to become a doctor.

Early Career
The two friends stayed in close contact while Otto was in the military, writing letters and Otto visiting Johanna whenever he was on leave and bringing back presents. Johanna didn't know but Otto carried around a picture of them from senior prom, as a reminder to make sure he came home. His friends in the special forces always assumed Johanna was his girlfriend and Otto never corrected them. When Johanna graduated, she wasn't expecting Otto to be there, since he was in the middle of a tour in Ukraine but he had come home just to watch her graduate. It was this gesture that made Johanna realize she had romantic feelings for him but like him, never confessed for the sake of their friendship. Johanna decided to join the medical corp, her reasoning being she wanted to keep a close eye on Konig and keep him safe.

Task Force 141
Johanna worked her way up and was eventually promoted to field medic for the special forces. She and Koing were brought onto Task Force 141, Johanna as a medic and Otto for a tank. Johanna took a mild interest in Alejandro but they never went past mock flirting. From the way Otto acted whenever Johanna and Alejandro were close, everyone on the team knew he was into Johanna and was jealous. Johanna assured him they were just friends and Otto backed off. Alejandro was the only one Johanna ever confessed her feelings for Otto to, and he struggled to keep it a secret, knowing he would get his throat slashed if he spilled anything but he did end up telling Rudy who was also sworn to secrecy. Eventually, during a mission, Otto was injured and nearly captured but Johanna denied direct orders to save him. Later, while patching him up and lecturing him about his recklessness is going to get him killed, Johanna let slip her feelings and the two were finally officially a couple. They kept their relationship a secret, both being very private people and not wanting to induce more teasing like they had since middle school. Soap eventually caught the two kissing on base one day and being unable to keep his mouth shut, immediately told the entire team and suffered Johanna's fury as a result.

Retirement
After years of being in the special forces together and hundreds of close calls, Otto and Johanna decided to retire to focus on their future together. They eventually married and settled down in their childhood town of Salzburg, Johanna becoming a surgical resident at a local hospital and Otto becoming an art professor at the local university. The two keep in touch with their friends from 141 and are raising their young son.
